| 850 stalling - ongoing problem 3 months DonH 03:44:21 |
| | '94 850 sedan non-turbo, 205K miles:
Had intermittent stalling, random, sometimes at startup, sometimes after engine hot. Seemed worse on hot days, or in heavy hot highway stop+go traffic. Worse also when a/c has been running, seemingly. Up to now would restart after sitting off for 5 min.
My trusty mechanic has, in the following order: replaced fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel switch relay, two fuel injectors that appeared clogged. We are both scratching our heads. I tried to loosen my gas cap per suggestion on this board, but today (mid-90s), on my way to work it just stalled, and even after sitting for an hour, would only turn over and over, almost, but never starting...
Any suggestions?

| 740 GLE sometimes won't start ? Mark Bratcher 00:47:42 |
| | I have a 1989 Volvo 740 GLE, B230F engine (I think ... standard 16-valve fuel-injected).
Anyway... in the summer, it will occasionally not start. I don't recall if it has happened in the cooler months. If it has, it has been much more rare. The starter cranks fine, very strong. It just won't ignite. Not sure if it's due to lack of fuel being pumped, or lack of spark. If I wait long enough, from a couple of minutes to ten minutes or so, and try again, it will finally start and it's good for a few days or more before it happens again. It doesn't happen very frequently.
Has anyone else experienced this behavior, and know what the cause is? My first thought is the fuel pump...
Thanks. Mark

| V70 2.5T Tires Guest 00:21:58 |
| | Finally, after 45,000 miles I got to replace the Pirelli P6 tires on my 2004 Volvo V70 2.5T. There was probably 15,000 miles left, but a sidewall bubble forced the issue. Those tires were harsh riding and noisy from the day I got the car in 2004 and regular balancing and rotation did nothing to improve things. In fact they got worse as time went on. I'm glad to say good riddance.
The replacement tire, a Yokohama AS430 is a complete contrast. They are smooth riding, quiet, stable and offer just as much directional and stopping control.
Why Volvo (and Ford) chose the Pirelli P6 for so many cars is beyond me.

| Part Number? Chris Stevens 20:47:24 |
| | Hi
After a long journey in Europe, I have come to the conclusion that having a wide angle door mirror on the left hand side of my car in addition to the standard right hand wide angle mirror would be of great use.
My car is a UK 1998 V70 Classic.
Can anybody advise me of the Volvo Part Number so that I can order this?

| More questions '92 740 cooling system.... Guest 16:16:44 |
| |
James (or anyone):
Re: '92 740 GLturbo overheating. replaced shorted electric cooling fan...still running hot. I am swapping in my spare 740 radiator, and have a new cooolant recovery tank coming from FCP Groton. I was just wondering if there is any way that you could overfill the system? The cap has an integral relief valve in it though doesn't it? An overheat or overpressure is supposed to vent out of the cap, saving the tank from cracking, isn't it?
When I have the new radiator installed, what is proper way to fill the system? With no fill cap on the radiator itself, how do you get the air out and ensure that the system is really full? What I have been doing is just addding water until mid-way on the reservoir; start car, and then add enough to bring it back to mid-level.
2nd question is... does your 740 have working AC, and do you switch in a second fan when the AC is on? Seems like the 89 Volvo sedan I used to have had an auxiliary fan that normally ran when the AC was on.... If yes is the answer, then I definitely need to get a second 12 in. fan and wire it up to come on with the AC....or just have two fans running all the time. With only one 12 in. fan alone, no mechanical fan, should it be sufficient in S.Texas summer climate...if you have a healthy cooling system, proper coolant mix, etc? (here in summer is the closest thing to hell imaginable) Geronimo

| Diesel Wagon? RoadHunter 15:42:37 |
| | Due to a recent tragic accident involving a friend, I am looking for a safe car for my wife and 11 month old daughter. I am pretty well informed on cars, but don't know squat about Volvos, other than they are known for safety. Ideally, I would prefer a diesel wagon. I hear, though, that with recent changes in diesel fule standards, that older diesel cars not designed to run on the cleaner fuel will have problems. I'm actually hoping to use biodiesel, but that's another story. Could someone please shed some light on the model naming convention that Volvo uses? I know with Mercedes, when I see a "D" in the name, it's a diesel. I'm scrolling through hundreds of ads for Volvos, and need to narrow my search to wagons only, and prefarably diesel, and a real bonus would be a manual transmission. Also, what kind of gas mileage are Volvo wagaons known for? Thanks for any advice you can give.

Googling "rxp gas kicker" is not very encouraging. | Questions on coolant recovery tank... Guest 16:49:50 |
| |
Its a 1992 Volvo 740 GL turbo wagon. THe car overheated....didn't get into the red, but got up above the usual mid-scale reading. I found the coolant recovery tank was empty. When looking for the reason why, I found the electric fan had shorted out. There is no mechanical fan on this one, it has only a one electric fan about 12 in dia. The radiator and electric fan were not OEM, the motorheads we bought the car from had replaced the radiator and rigged up a cooling fan, probably not even off of a Volvo. So I refilled the reservoir, and bought an electric fan of the same dia. (probably 12 in) and installed it. The fan that was rigged up when we bought the car was unshrouded, and about 2 in back from the radiator. Ths doesn't seem good, as this allowed it to pull a lot of air in that had not flowed through the radiator. The aftermarket fan I got from Autozone has an integral shroud, and it is installed flush with the radiator.Virtually all the air has to flow through the radiator. Should cool better than the old one it seems. So I thought I had the fix....yet when driven on hot summer day, it started going up towards the red again. It lost coolant, as the plastic recovery tank has a little crack in the top, near the overflow return hose. THere was a high pressure build-up in it, enough to crack it. But the gauge never showed but a little bit over mid-scale....yet it must have reached boiling point to build up such a high pressure? I am thinking the recovery tank cracked BECAUSE of a cooling problem, and wasn't the initial CAUSE of the overheat.
Anyway, I didn't see any Volvo 740 coolant recovery tanks on Ebay, and I don't want to pay the high price of one from the Volvo dealer. Is there a generic or one from some other model that will work as well? Is the cap suppose to relieve pressure on an overheat? It looks like there is a valve (actually two) in it.
The radiator is definitely old, but the core is not rotten, and it looks like the fins are not clogged up. It's a little hard to tell for sure, as the AC condenser is in front. I dod check the thermostat....took it out when teh engine was still hot, and it was full open. So it is definitily not a bad thermostat. Are there still such things as radiator specialty shops that could flow-check the radiator? The car has lots of miles on it...it could also be a bad water pump, I guess. If the top hose is suppose to get stiff after starting the engine, but while the thermostat is still closed, then there is not much water circulating, because it is soft, it doesn't stiffen up from pressure at all, it seems.
And yes, I did check that the new fan runs once the engine gets up to operating temperature.
Come to think of it, back around May a mechanic got the AC working again....then in mid-June the wife has the overheating event. Two factors that would have put a lot more heat stress on the engine...AC compressor and the weather!
Ideas?

| C70/S70/V70 Center Channel Speaker Removal I VanCamp 13:37:59 |
| | I recently purchased a '99 C70 HPT Coupe and despite how much fun it is, my head is about to explode from an annoying squeek in the dash eminating from around the center channel speaker area. I'm guessing it's plastic rubbing on plastic. Does anybody know how to remove the center channel cover? I can't seem to find latches or screws and I don't want to break it or make the squeek any worse. Besides that the car runs great, but cruising is severely hindered by the rabid chipmunks battling in my dashboard. Thanks!

| Three different questions about a 1980 240 DL Mwveenhu 03:25:01 |
| | First off I have a 1980 240 DL that I'm doing some work on. I was pokin' around underneath the drivers side dash and found a small metal hatch that can be opened and closed about an inch or so. I haven't the slightest idea what this is. It looked like some kind of ventilation opening, but I couldn't see any vents on the outside to speak of.
Secondly, I was trying to fix my fasten seat belt signals and I got to the point where the signals work, but only when I touch the negative terminal (which connects through the rear center console lightbulb) to a piece of metal. I thought this was perhaps a grounding issue, but I couldn't find a place where grounding may have been before. I was also confused because even when I plugged both seat belts in and had the bulb grounded it stayed on. I'm not sure what the problem is.
Lastly, this is kind of a general, looking for parts type question. I am in need of the two panels that go under the dash on the drivers and passengers side. they attach with clips to cover up wiring and such and without it my car looks fairly crappy. Any information would be appreciated.

| V70 Immobiliser location ? Nick 14:02:08 |
| | My 1997 V70 Immobiliser / receiver (the bit that receives the signal from the key fob transmitter) seems to be failing or the aerial has come out or something.... anyway it only works when you are about a foot or two from the car and the spare fob doesn't work at all - I have tried new batteries in each and no difference, so I assume it's the car unit - question is, where is it and are there any common things to check (aerial unplugged ? ) or is it a new receiver at a dealer job ?
Thanks

| Adjustment on S40 sun roof??? Steve and Amy Bernth 09:45:33 |
| | The sun roof on my 2000 S40 no longer closes like it is supposed to. When you push the button to put the glass in the fully closed position, you can now still hear just the slightest wind noise and it leaks a little when it rains. I'd say it needs to go up maybe 1/4" more. Is there some kind of adjustment screw for this or is the whole mechanism just starting to wear out?

| 850 Recirc Air Door Intermediate Lever Info WyleECoyote 20:23:55 |
| | 94 wagon, NA, non-ECC
One can find many posts on this but very limited info on part numbers, installation notes etc.
SYMPTOM[s]: [1] Outside air inside of cabin regardless of Recirc Switch position [2] Intermediate Lever [recirc air motor-to-cable connector] visibly broken [3] Air Shutter not moving [as observed thru air intake with cabin filter removed, if installed]
2 styles
INTERMEDIATE LEVER [1] WHITE in color [obsolete] part number 3522160 [reportedly breaks easy] [2] BLACK in color [current style] part number 6808653 [List Price $8.20 in NH]
NOTES: [1] The lever is not symmetrical, install with the FLAT portion of the squared hole toward the motor. [2] One side of the cable end retainer has an opening to facilitate slipping over the barrel-stop on the cable [much like bicycle handbrake levers], self-explanatory once you see it. [3] Once the glove box was removed, I found it very easy to install with the key in the "I" position, Recirc Switch "ON" [lamp lit]. Next, grab the cable with long hemostats/forceps to hold in place while the square end of the lever was easily manuevered over the shaft.

| Air Conditioner, 96 850 T John Yahn 06:27:16 |
| | Recently the AC on my 850 with 260000 miles started to act up. Sitting in traffic or idling for a few minutes on a hot day causes the AC to stop blowing cold air. After driving a mile or so at normal speed it starts working again. Engine temp stays normal. The AC works great with normal driving. Any thoughts?
Thank you John

| V70 noise Eastender 23:30:42 |
| | Our 2001 Volvo V70 has just started making a whining/clattering sort of noise with the ignition on but not with the engine on. it seems to be coming from the front nearside area of the engine compartment, in front of the fuse box area by an air assembly of some sort. It is some sort of
motor I guess.
All the things are off inside - eg aircon, which i thought it might be something to do with.
Any ideas?
Thx

| '98 v70 AWD flat tire Theo.Chan@Gmail.Com 18:09:08 |
| | I had the bad luck of having a flat on my 98 V70 AWD. This is the model with the viscous coupling that can be damaged by mismatches in tire diameter.
I am using 205/55/16 Michelin MXV4s, and have taken the following action so far:
i) the flat (passenger front) was replaced with the exact same tire, brand new, having 10/32" of tread depth. the driver's front was at 13/64" of tread depth, and the two rear tires at 7/32" of tread depth.
ii) I have rotated the two rear tires up front, so that both passenger front and driver's front are at 7/32", and rotated the two front tires back so the rear driver's tire is 13/64" and rear passenger's 10/32". All tires are inflated to the same PSI.
To summarize the tire diameters: driver's front 7/32" (formerly driver's rear) passenger's front 7/32" (formerly passenger's rear) driver's rear 13/64" (formerly driver's front) passenger's rear 10/32" (new tire).
I understand that the system is very sensitive to differences in tire diameter and asking the dealer, they indicated that the tolerance is within 3/32" of wear. My concern is that the new tire, at 10/32" is 7/64" larger than the smallest tire (13/64"), which is 1/64" (0.5/32") over the recommended tolerance.
Do you think that the difference in diameter is severe enough to damage the viscous coupling in the car?
What would your recommended tire placement be based on the diameters listed?
Thank you for your help.
