	Just replaced the alternator 7700 miles ago for 650.00 so this time, I'm doing it myself. It's a T5 and the power steering pump is located right above it. I'm going to ask one question at a time and with your much appreciated guidance.....maybe I can get it done. First of all...... It looks as though if I get the steering pump out of the way, that I may be able to just set it to the side and gain access to the alternator? Looks like all the lines going to it are flexible. Is this the case? Thanks.

Can not be sure but I think it is the bearings, it makes a wooshing sound, everything seems ok for now. I have found a place (bosch authorized) that will rebuild it for about $US 140 as well, must be the going rate for this kind of thing. Catch is that price is for me handing them the alternator, I have to take it out and put it back, they have no facilities to remove and replace. I too have the power steering pump above the alternator. What is the simplest way to get the alternator out? I see the power steering pump has 5 bolts holding it to the brackets plus that long bolt with the tube spacer in the front of the pump. Is it simpler to remove the pump while still attached to these mounting brackets, if so what are the details? As we all know, there is not alot of room in this area. I bet there is some sort of special shape wernch to get to some of the bolts that hold the steering pump in place with out having to remove the cooling system hose above it. Any tips? I have been lurking for a long time and have found the help here to be outstanding. Thanks for all replies. p.s. I have heard that the regulator has the brushes built in, must be under that plastic cover? Could the brushes be the source of the noise?

I suspected overvoltage & it needed to be in the car for them to diagnose, they just dive in and rip it out after checking if you want it fixed. I would rather the shop put it back in case it's not right, there are less variables when they do it. Can you loosen the belts enough to feel if the bearings are bad?

Can you loosen the belts> enough to feel if the bearings are bad? > I did pull the belt and found that it spins freely at the slow number of revolutions I can turn it by hand, and makes a lower pitched noise than when the engine is spinning it. It may not be bearings, but something is causing a noise and it has me wondering and concerened. I will look around see if other places will do the lot for a similar price and go from there. It looks like a bigger pain to get it out and put it back than the rebuilding process.
