Volvo 240 shooting oil

Beanermachine 14 April 2005 23:17:27
Does anyone know what this is. I replaced the valve cover gasket and
the oil fill cap, but oil is still running out underneath the cap.
There has to be a block farther down that is keeping it pushed back
up. Any ideas would be awesome!

Thanks
Chris

It sounds like your crankcase is not vented. The flame-trap is supposed
to be serviced regularly.

The Volvo doesn't have a PCV valve by definition, but has a flame trap
(Volvo's equivalent). This needs to be replaced and the fitting cleaned.
There is also a small diameter vacuum hose which needs to be clear.
Replacing is normally easier than cleaning it out. Make sure the brass
fitting on the intake manifold end of the hose is clear also. If any of
these are plugged, you can develop chronic oil leaks plus the fact the
throttle housing will get dirties sooner.

Stephen Henning's response is right on the money. My 760T doesn't have a
flame trap but the air/oil separator plugged on the freeway. I coated my
engine compartment with about 2 quarts of oil from the dipstick tube by the
time I reached the next off-ramp.

Your flame trap is clogged, I'm surprised it hasn't blown out the rest of
the oil seals by now.

I've also seen the tabs on the oil cap that hold it to the valve cover
bent enough that it's not held down tight enough.

Also the rubber gasket on the oil cap can disintegrate or get ripped
and fall off.
