Advice on 92 GTI Engine Rebuild

David Abineri 3 May 2005 06:05:25
I have a '92 GTI with 200K and it's burning some oil. I'm planning to
rebuild but have questions. Should I have the head rebuilt or just
replace it with one already to go? Is it worth replacing rings? What
about pistons. Is there a reliable way to tell whether the leaking is
valves or rings?

Thanks for any help on this, I am just beginning to think through all
the possibilities. Anyone out there done this?

Thanks, David Abineri

JMHO but I prefer to keep what you have and rework it. If you buy some
rebuilt head you really don't know what you will be getting or what has
happened to it in the past. Of course if you want to do the job in less
than a day, then a rebuilt head will hasten the repair.

Compression test, Leakdown test, Wet compression test might help you
determine what is wrong.
Valve guide seals might be a culprit and they can be changed without
removing the cylinder head.

I have about 228K miles on my old 83 GTi engine in my 83 Audi 4KS. It is
doing very nicely but I did have a valve job done when I installed the
engine back in 1991 (at 85K miles)
later,

Have a cylinder leak down test done along with a compression check. With
that information then you will know if the rings are worn out yet?

And if it is rings, I presume a re bore might be needed? Does one use
over sized rings? Where can you get them for this engine?

Thanks for the advice.

Don't bother, get a two litre unit from a mk3 golf, it's a direct
replacement apart from the distributor you will need a conversion ring.
Conversion parts available from Golf GTI Websites.
