Vanagon cooling woes

HooHa 8 March 2005 03:13:44
Having trouble keeping the 84 Westy cool. I had a leak in the double-T pipe
right by the expansion tank. I got the metal aftermarket replacement and
things were ok, but now the van overheats consistently. The temp needle
pegs and the low fluid indicator blinks.

I filled and burped the system, checked for leaks and for exhaust gasses -
it's fine. Few days later it overheats again and I replace the thermostat.
A week after that it overheats again and I pulled the radiator out, flushed
it both ways with my hose, and also flushed the system from the tank to the
(disconnected) front radiator hose - all clear. Put everything back
together filled and bled it and was happy for a few days.

Now it's overheating again. I'm thinking about replacing the water pump
next. It's not leaking, but why else would the thing be overheating? I'm
running out of ideas Someone told me that I could have a water pump with a
plastic impeller that can wear out without leaking... what do you think?

Do you have good heat in the van, if so I don't think it's the waterpump?
Did you bleed the cooling system from the radiator top?
Does the radiator fan run?

Having owned a 84 vanagon I can speak with some experience. First they are
very hard to "burp". Second if your not leaking water at the H2o pump it's
ok. Third it's most likely a head gasket or head problem. I had all three
cause this problem. Water pumps go bad because the belt is tightened so it
does not squeal when starting. Let it squeal! Also there's a vent in the
large "H" plastic part where the big hoses come together to help get the air
out.

Sorry

Heat is bad (worse in front, better in back)

Bled the cooling system from the radiator top. Had the van on ramps up
front (and on a slope) so the nose was nice and high. Replaced the fans
thermoswitch. Watched it cycle. After I do this it could idle all day and
keep it's cool. Couple hours of driving and the indicator is pegged, and
the low fluid light is on (and the overflow tank it completely full).

I hate to pull off the waterpump because the AC is in the way ( plus a new
one is $60 at Bow Wow). But like I said, I'm out of ideas.

Check the archives of the mailing lists at vanagon.com. This issue
comes up repeatedly (one of the joys of owning a water-cooled Vanagon).
