Fill the tank halfway with 93 Octane and that'll take care of the problem.

 I know what your problem is! Theres water in the engine!
Just kidding, after all, this is an Air Cooled forum (old bugs, ghias,
busses...etc)
Do you run AC at all? Even if not, sometimes the AC relay(s) that
adjusts your throttle can mess things up pretty bad, but its an easy
fix. Take it to VW, it should still be under waranty (unless you took
it on the gnarliest of road trips ever).
Good luck, and post in the water cooled group next time. This is for
the old school volksies.
