Ok Here goes Newbie post

Glenn 30 March 2005 18:12:05
I have a 1600cc 71 standard beetle and when the engine get hot after a half
hour drive it will not idle on all of the cylinders to get it to run on all
four I apply a slight pressure sideways on the distributor and all is Ok.
So I take the distributor out and there seems to be little to no play with
the shaft. I tried a separate ground wire and nope not that new rotor and
cap tried also.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Glenn

Newbies are always welcome here.

Does this engine have the stock distrib with 2 vac hoses?

Where exactly are you pressing on it? On the cap?
On the cast alum housing?

It is the stock distributor with the two vacuum hoses. I am pressing on the
housing and not the cap I did find that the "O" rings were flattened out I
am off to the garage to install it to see if it will be held in place
better.
any thoughts?

Thanks Glenn

The cap is on tight and while I was putting the Distributor back in I
noticed that the clamp that holds it tight was also bent and keeping it from
going all the in so I corrected that and will see if the beast runs better
on the way to work tomorrow.I plan on buying new wires soon. I do not have
any digital pictures and yes it is my first beetle. Thanks for the responses
this is a great list. I will post any updates

Thanks Glenn

That was the problem for those who are interested , the bracket that holds
the distributor in time was bent and not allowing the unit to engage all the
way and was enough to drive me nuts.
Thanks to those who responded and letting me use this as a sounding board
