Got the following message from AOL. Been on Ramva for 8 Years

Please Note: The AOL Newsgroup service will be discontinued in early 2005.

For members using AOL over a dial-up connection, you will no longer be able to
access Newsgroups. If you have a separate high-speed connection, you can
contact your broadband provider to see if they offer Newsgroups.

Well that sux. Can you go through Google Groups?

It requires you to sign up for an account, but it's free for

Google is my backup. It just has a 4 hour delay or something.
I've had it for a couple of years. No probs. Can access my NG from
anywhere, and post too.

Just sign up with news.individual.net. I use that on my laptop so I
can check RAMVA from my lectures :-)

Apply here: http://www.individual.net/
They take a couple of days to send out your username and password.

Combine that with a newsreader like Free Agent.. www.forteinc.com

You may wish to try isp.com as your provider, Mozilla/Firefox for your
browser. Google will give you access to most Usenet newsgroups.
Inexpensive and reliable.

They must have greased the cables or something, because I can see
my post on it to Bill B. with a 10:48 time stamp, and yours
(to which I'm replying now) stamped at 11:21. Pacific Standard
Time, I guess.

Maybe they have. That was a good 1-2 years ago. They said they have a 4
hour delay. "Don't worry if you can't see your message on the newsgroup
immediately, it will usually take up to 4 hours before Google archives
are refreshed"

or something along those lines. Toooo long ago for me to remember
exactly.

In the past month or so, gecko based browsers (mozilla, firefox)
finally overtook IE browsers in visits to my website.. 43.61%
gecko, 41.05% IE. Remaining percentage was various other browsers.

This on a site that gets ~7k hits per day, with ~8000 unique IP's
visiting in a month.

Don't know if that's a fair sample of the internet but it was
nice to see. ;)

was kind enough to post replies for me a few times. I hope this works

Another vote for Mozilla Firefox.

Yeah, I've been using it since 1.0 came out. My school is installing it as
the default browser on every new computer image and the number of trouble
calls caused by spyware has dropped dramatically.

Install Firefox and the AdBlock extension and the 'Net suddenly looks like
it did 10 years ago. No pop-ups or banners spoiling my favorite sites!

As far as Usenet servers go, there are quite a few out there that are free
or inexpensive. Don't let AOL's dropping their server knock you out of
Usenet!

As a good friend refers to AOL: "it's the internet with training
wheels-unless you just simply enjoy paying WAY more than what you should for
a provider or just can't live without their goofy chatrooms, then get
yerself a REAL ISP!"

A couple weeks with one and you'll be kicking yerself for staying with them
for as long as you did...

So are you able to use those features without using AOL for your
internet access or do you have to disconnect from your regular ISP and
temporarily connect via AOL to use those features?

hehe..okay....i left out some possibly important info for you to actually
follow me....i use AOL for broadband....it is a "bring your own ISP"
service...so i have a local ISP(local cable company) and i use that connection
to connect to AOL....so i can access message boards and such that i really
enjoy....i also enjoy the online radio and videos that i have access to with
aol for broadband....

The bastardized part I refer to is when you said:> >"i use AOL for broadband....it is a "bring your own ISP"> >service...so i have a local ISP(local cable company) and i use that connection> >to connect to AOL...">
I've never heard of using one company "for broadband" whatever that> means exactly and then using another "local ISP" to "connect to AOL".> "ISP" means "Internet Service Provider." They typically "provide" you> with "service" to the "Internet." Normally someone has one ISP and> that ISP provides service to the internet.

I have broadband from one provider, and when it's down, I use a modem
connection with another provider.
