HVAC Control Panel Goes Dark P Man101 02:20:56
 02 Camry, SE V6

The HVAC control panel just went dark when I have the lights on. Only
the two left knobs (Fan, Temperature) are dark. The AC and Recirc
indicators on those knobs come on normally. The third knob that
controls the air source is lit normally as well.

Is this a fuse issue? If so, which fuse am I looking for?

Thanks in advance....

3VZE Dealer says it will taked 8 hours to adjust the valves.!!!!! Porch 02:15:00
I just replaced the head gaskets and everything went well. But I lost
track of the valve buckets/shims. Normaly, I would adjust the valves
myself (never done it, but it does not look too hard), but I lack the
time and the shims. Since my truck was due for the Relay Rod recall, I
figued I would let the dealer take care of the valves too. Dealer is
Toyota of Temecula Valley. Yes I will state there name since I buy
parts from them all the time and they are a good bunch.

The dealer quoted me 8 hours to do the valves? Now it takes me about 30
minutes to get eveything off and the valve covers off. Looking at the
book, and with a shim set and correct SST tool in hand, I can't see it
taking more then an hour to check and replace the shims. Then 30
minutes to button everything up. And I am just shade-tree with basic
skills.

What is the dealer doing for the next 6 hours? Is this milking it or
what?

1997 Corolla Neutral Safety Switch Question Ghislain 01:33:51
 A couple days ago, my daughter's '97 Corolla 1.8 (7AFE engine) with a
4-speed auto wouldn't start. The usual instrument cluster lights were lit,
but nothing else happened.. After I pushed the transmission shift lever
forward to make sure that it was in Park, the car started. Since this is a
very intermittent problem, should I replace the neutral safety switch or
adjust the shift linkage (can that be done and if so, where and how)?

TIA.

4 or 6 Cyl Camry? Guest 01:30:09
I was looking at a new Camry, and I was just wondering if I should buy
the 4, or the 6cyl? Is there a huge difference in gas milage between the
two? Is there a noticible power difference in the 6 cyl versus the 4
cyl? Thanks in advance, for any help on this.

03 Matrix Tranny repair/rebuild advice needed... Guest 00:51:53
 Greetings,

I'm looking for useful advice on the cost/value of a replace new or
replace used versus a rebuilt tranny on an '03 Matrix XR w/ about
83,000 miles on it... I do try and take good care of my car but this
one snuck up on me, had it not been for the high temps/humidity the
last few weeks leading my to push my windows up I'd have not even
noticed the grinding at 2500+RPM on the highway (5th gear runs about
2800RPM at 65MPH). Not 20 minutes after I called my wife to say I
needed to have it looked at, was I sitting on the side of the road
waiting for a Tow. In the end I'm not sure that catching it early
would have lead to a different result save the cost/time spent with the
tow.

Dealership quotes about $3200 and change for a replace new...not
exactly what I want to put into the car. Had a mechanic try and pickup
a used one but that fell through, now the mechanic is looking at a
rebuild. The mechanic already has $800 from me towards buying a used
tranny (half the quoted price on the job).

Beyond the cost/value question, should I be taking my car to a Toyota
transmission specialist for this work? Is there a resource where I can
find a reputable local person to do the work... Angie's List has not
been helpful for my area.

Thanks for the help in advance.

2006 Corolla LE Maplights standard? Jeff 21:43:53
Last month I bought a new 2006 Corolla LE with the 5-speed manual
transmission. I was surprised to find it didn't have the maplights under the
rear-view mirror (the car I test-drove had that option but I eventually
ending up buying this one at a different dealer).

The documentation I can find on the Internet seems to indicate that the
maplights are a standard feature of the 2006 Corolla LE model. And the
window sticker also indicates that maplights are a standard feature.

I'm guessing that the dealer is going to have to put maplights in at no
charge, correct?

Any ideas on how they wouldn't be there in the first place?

Jeff

96 camry LE - coolant/engine probs Fatherfigure 15:23:30
 Hiya,

I have a 1996 Camry. An issue occured recently. While driving, the temp
guage went up to almost max. I stopped car and looked under hood.
Reserve coolant level was fine. Waited a bit, drove and guage was still
high. Stopped again, and waited. I opened the radiator cap a bit and
fluid started spewing/bubbling out. It stopped after 2 mins. I put cap
on and drove - all seemed well. Then the engine started acting up -
shaking violently. At stop sign, the rpms started fluctuating till
engine stopped. Looked under hood - reserve coolant empty.

I had a nearby mechanic look at it - he didnt see a leak in radiator
and he put a new cap on the radiator. Drove on and ran into problem
again.

Any ideas on what is up? Bad radiator? I plan to take car in to a
mechanic this weekend, so I want to have some suggestions what to look
for. Its a 10 year old car and I dont want to spend too much on it.

1988 PickUp Brake Blues Mothy 12:08:25
Well, after taking a couple weeks to replace my calipers and brake pads
in the front, the e-brake cable, and various brake tubes (all after
work while trying to paint my house, take care of kids, etc.) and not
yet getting to the rear brakes, I noticed push-through when coming to a
stop (i.e. if I kept pushing on the brake peddle after coming to a stop
the peddle would push-through scarily), so I decided to take it into
Toyota to do the back brakes and make sure everything was alright. Cue
foreboding music.

In the space of three weeks the back brakes that needed replacing had
suddenly become fine and now only the bleed-valves (or cylinder valves)
needed to be replaced, as they were frozen and they couldn't bleed
them. $300. And, the master cylinder was probably going bad, hence
the push-through, so now we're at $750. After dropping it off last
Wednesday, they finally got the parts by yesterday and were supposed to
start on everything this morning, as my wife and kids are leaving town
for a week today.

Well, I just got a call from Toyota and when they were taking the
master cylinder out the brake booster "came apart." Is that possible?
Normal? A Force Majeure event? So now that's an additional $500 and a
2-3 week wait. He said that he could look around for a re-manufactured
brake booster, but that's not something they normally do. How does
this sound to our resident Toyota experts?

Toyota tops reliability rankings Anonymous 09:27:42
 Toyota tops reliability rankings

Toyota has come top of a survey gauging the dependability of cars in
the US.
The study of vehicles sold as new in 2003 by researchers JD Power
found that Toyota cars caused the fewest problems to their owners,
followed by Honda.

Almost 50,000 owners of cars and trucks were quizzed for the survey
with owners reporting an average of 227 problems per 100 vehicles.

Wind noise and loud brakes were the most common faults. Land Rover had
the most problems reported.

When individual models were examined, luxury cars had the fewest
number of faults with the Toyota Lexus and Ford Mercury topping the
rankings.

Fewer faults

MOST DEPENDABLE CAR BRANDS
Toyota (179)
Honda (194)
Jaguar (210)
BMW (212)
Ford (224)
Source: JD Power
(problems per 100 vehicles)

All problems with cars were given equal weight by the survey.

Top performers in a string of categories included the Honda Civic as
best compact car, the Honda 2000 as top compact premium sporty car and
the Toyota Lexus LS 430 as best large premium car.

The average number of faults was 227 per 100 cars - ten fewer than a
year ago.

MOST TROUBLESOME VEHICLES
Land Rover (438)
Saab (326)

"The voice of the consumer is getting heard by the manufacturers,"
said JD Power spokesman Neil Oddes.

"They are understanding what's getting replaced, what's going wrong,
and then they're taking that information and designing better
products."

Corolla Automatic Transmission Shifting SlyckTom 03:40:05
 Hi All,

I have a 1993, Corolla, 4 cyl, 1.8 liter, EFI engine. The car has
200,500 miles.

Here's the situation.

When I'm driving at all lower speeds and RPMs, the tranny shifts very
smooth - as if it were new. However, if I'm entering an on ramp or
otherwise bringing the engine to high speed or high RPM (maybe
accellerating past 50 or 60)s, the tranny shifts into gear not as
smooth. I dont want to say it clunks or it shifts hard, because those
are too strong of words. It just isn't as smooth as during lower RPMs
and speed.

After the tranny shifts down in this instance its smooth afterwards
regardless of speed or RPM...

Does anyone have insight into this?

TIA!!

Toyota Starlet - Auto - Fuel consumption Query Jk 00:14:41
Has anyone an idea of the fuel consumption figures of a '99 Starlet S?

I see quoted figures for a manual of around 44-49 mpg and more!!!

I am told that an auto transmission depletes the economy by 30%!!!

I seem to recall some time ago a general quote suggesting that Auto
Trans takes around 5-8% off manual figures.

I have searched the 'net but cannot find any clues.
