Re: Check engine light

Teresakd3 31 July 2008 01:29:32
We can not get the check engine light to go off. We hooked it up to the
diagnostic machine. It said to replace the cam position sensor or the
single circuit. This one does not have a cam position sensor. We checked
the crank position sensor. What is the single circuit referring too? Has
anyone else had this problem?

Check engine light came on every time since about two years ago. Month
ago before I was going to replace original gas cap on ’98 S-70, I tried
to oil gas cap gasket and it WORKED! It could be that old and dry gas
cap gasket leaked.

I spread out one drop of oil all over the gas cap gasket. Q-tip was
handy. Then I filled the tank. Few days later, check engine light start
to work as supposed to.

Hi All,

How do I turn off the check engine light? The car won't pass inspection
with it on. I tried disconnecting the battery but nothing happened. I
found some check engine code readers/erasers on EBay here
http://stores.ebay.com/OneSmartMove

Has anyone tried similar one?

Thanks,

This is an easy one. Fix the problem that is causing the light to
trip.

'Normally' most people fix the problem and then the light goes off.

If you don't fix the trouble, you will not be able to turn it off short
of removing the bulb and then it will fail the bulb test anyway...

Turning off the check engine light is really easy;
the first thing you need to do is to stop spamming your e-bay
store on usenet.

No luck in the Ford newsgroup? Assuming that is not your ebay store, good
call posting the question here. It's like the blind leading the blind in the

First step:
Find out why the check engine light it lit.

Step two:
Fix the problem.

Then you will pass your testing.

The OBD/II scanner you found on eaby will acomplish step one but if
there is a genuine fault, erasing the trouble code may not turn the
light out for long. Once you know why the check engine light is on the
fix amay be simple (or not) however.

Most "chain" autoparts stores like AutoZone, Cragin/Shucks and Pep Boys
will check the codes for you for free.

Good luck

It would help to know the year, model, and where you are, but...

You need to get the code and fix the problem. If you don't fix the problem,
the light will just come back on.

If your inspection jurisdiction does a real OBDII inspection (96 and newer),
they will hook a reader up to it and find any pending emissions-related
codes, even if the light is off. In order to pass inspection (in many
places), the computer must show that certain onboard tests have passed.
Resetting the light will also reset these tests, and you will still fail.
You have to drive the car a certain amount before the tests will show as
passed, and if the problem still exists, you will get the light again.

If you just have a visual inspection, and the light needs to be off, you can
reset it just before you go in, and hope for the best. Many auto parts
stores will read the code and reset the light for free.

Not necessarily. There are three different OBDII protocols in use and I
have yet to see a code reader that can't connect to and interpret all three.
Some OBDII modules installed in some 94 and 95 models are orphans but I
don't think Toyota is one of these makes. My 95 Taco can be read with
standard readers. More than you want to know about OBDII protocols here:
http://www.obdii.com/
I own an OBD connector and software that I got here, less than $100:

I've heard that some Autozone stores will check and clear codes for you free
but have no firsthand knowledge of this.

YEAH, there is a similar free one at autozone. They read codes for free.

The key here is not to turn off the check engine light, but, rather, to find
out what is causing it and fix the problem.

You assumed the car is OBD II, but the OP hasn't told us which year he has,
so I assumed he's got an OBD I car. If my assumption is correct, there isn't
an OBD II code reader that will read his computer -- or at least there isn't
one that he could reasonably afford.

I took my pre-'96 truck to Autozone to suck the codes out, and they could
not do it for me. I bought the OBD I code reader for my truck for $35. I
could have bought any number of OBD II readers, and they make one that costs
$250 but which requires an adaptor cable costing another $30, and I still
get only a blinking light. The standard run-of-the-mill OBD II code readers
run in a range of about $50 to about $150, with the more expensive units
providing more information, but I suggest that most of us that service our
own car can get all of the information we need for about $75. Of course, we
can get the same information for free if we are willing to drive down to the
corner.

What you need to do is sell your car and take the bus. You're too stupid
to handle even an extreme-idiot light.

Something like taking your car to a car parts place that offers free

You have three choices:

1. Remove the light bulb

2. Give the inspector an extra $20

3. Actually find out what caused the light to come on, which involves
getting the code, finding out what the code means, finding out what
caused the error, and fixing it so the error doesn't happen again.
How this is done depends a lot on the kind of car you have.

The reader/erase isn't going to help if you don't fix the problem. Find
the source of the problem and then fix it.

YOU are exactly why taking a bus is NOT acceptable - sitting
amongst a bunch of you's is just not something I can stand to do
on a daily basis.
And if you're not riding busses, you should be, because I
don't want you on the road with me or anyone else for that
matter!

That's not necessarily true, depending on where you live, and I
didn't know it was true anywhere.
They do NOT check the light here, or care - only the test
results matter.
You could have Check Engine, No Oil, Overtemp and any other
lite you have on, and they would still go by the test results
THEY get. Now, that would get you past the emissions tests if
you passed, but ... dunno about the other inspections where
you're located<g>.

We don't even know if we're talking about a Honda or a Ferrari.
You need to find out the actual CODE, then get it fixed. The Ferrari
owner's manual agrees with the Honda one: "Don't drive your vehicle when
the Check Engine light is on."

The car won't pass inspection>with it on.

In many areas '96 up won't pass inspection unless all the self
diagnostic monitors have run and passed. Turning off the check engine
lights resets these so they all have to run again. Presumably
whatever caused the check engine light to come on will cause it to
come on again by the time the monitors are complete. Just in case you
are having trouble getting it, it will either fail for monitors
incomplete or the detected fault which you are apparently loath to
have diagnosed and repaired.

Of course since you chose to withhold the make and model of your
vehicle as well as where the vehicle is registered -- which determines
what the applicable emissions standards are -- any answer you receive
from me or anyone else is 98% speculative and useless.
I tried disconnecting the battery but nothing happened.

That normally won't erase fault codes on 96 or newer.
But, for all we know, this is a heavy duty diesel and not OBDII
compliant.

Try disconnecting the battery again. Leave it that way, and your check

In addition to other responses..... including the one alluding to spam
activity and just to help reduce the number of suckers.....

Clearing codes to turn off the CEL wont get you a "pass".... clearing codes
also clears system monitors which sets a DTC P1000. This code alerts the
inspector and also nets a "fail" during the test. The only way the
diagnostic monitors will complete (which will get rid of the P1000
automatically), is to drive the car.

Now.... since the CEL is "on", there is a concern that will keep one or more
monitors from completing...

And we are right back to "why not just get the damned thing fixed?".

I bought a code reader off E bay last year fro about 20 bucks, its
works fine, and resets the light after 4 cycles.

You need to disconnect the battery for at least an hour, maybe more to
reset the computer that way.

Problem is, if you have a genuine code failure, reseting it will not
let you pass the emmission test. They will see that the code was reset
and that the ecu has not gone through the required number of
verification cycles to have cleared the code on its own.

The good thing about the code reader is that when you do go in to get
the fault fixed, you can tell the service writter that its throwing
XYZ fault codes - trust me you get allot more respect that way,,,

Also, loose battery cables, or a failing battery can play havoc with
the ECU and cause it to throw all sorts of erroneus codes.

Thanks,

Disconnecting the battery does erase the code but your car is still
busted.

 Hi,
Disconnect the battery. Leave it disconnected for > 5 mins.
My car was missing and the check engine light was on.

I took of the distributor cap which had oil and water on the inside.
Cleaned it with some kitchen roll. Reset the check engine light.
everything seems fine now, fingers crossed.

hope this helps

Most common issue is a loose or bad gas cap. But, have the code read.
If you are in the USA, Autozone will read it for you. The second most
common problem is a bad DI cassette - that is something you should fix
as it will not be long before you car stops moving.

Get the code checked and post again.

Except if the shop is doing the inspection right, they will turn the key
to the run position without starting to check for the lights to come on.
If they don't see all the lights, they know it's either burnt out or
removed - then they inform you after-the-fact that they just put a
rejection sticker on your car.

 Try turning the ignition on and off 3 times to see if there are any codes;
otherwise, when you disconnect the battery to reset it make sure you leave
it disconnected long enough. I have had to leave mine disconnected for
several minutes for it to reset.

One other thing to note is that in many states, if you just disconnect
the battery to clear the code, the car STILL won't pass inspection.
When they hook up the scanner, the OBD diagnostics will report that it
has been reset and has not had enough operating hours to evaluate the
engine and emissions. That's an automatic fail, and you'll be told to
come back after the car's been running for a bit longer. Of course, if
the problem that threw the Check Engine Light on hasn't been fixed, then
by the time the car is ready to be inspected, your light will be on again.

The inspections are done for a reason. If there's a problem, then fix
it! Then your car should pass.

Around here, they don't even bother looking at the light. The inspector
just plugs the inspection computer into your car's OBD II jack. Any codes
are downloaded, and if the car isn't ready to be tested (e.g. you just
disconnected the battery and not enough drive cycles have elapsed since),
you will have to come back later to complete the test. The test report
includes any trouble codes that have been set which are relevant to
emissions. This is the case for vehicles 'model years 94 or '96 and later.
Earlier vehicles get the standard tailpipe + dyno test at various power
settings.

If the light is on, there must be a code set. Find out what that code is,
and find out what needs to be done to fix it. If you're stuck, post the
code here. It might be a loose gas cap, it might be a simple oxygen sensor,
it might be a misfiring spark plug. Who knows until you get the code. Your
car will be better off if the problem can be resolved, regardless of the
emissions test. If you need help getting the code, post your vehicle model
and year here. Certain vehicles can display the code to you on their own,
and some stores, such as Autozone will obtain your diagnostic codes for no
charge.

Hope this helps.

What code does it set? And what conditions make it turn off? If it was as

 All,
Our 2004 Accord flashed 10 times. I know I looked this up somewhere before
but can't find it again. What is the diagnostic for 10 flashes?
Thanks

My fault for not verifying what my wife told me. When she got home last
night I started diagnosing and it was the maintenance required light, not
the check engine. Changed the oil and filter for good measure and reset the
light. All is well.

 2000 Accord, 145,000 miles 4cyl VTec.

The other night I got gas, not a full tank, pulled out and almost
immediately the check engine light came on. Car ran fine. The other idiot
lights function and did not illuminate. No other indications of a problem
The gas cap was tight.

OBD code was P0401 EGR flow insufficient. The code cleared and the check
engine light is out.

Is it telling me the muffler or cat is going out? Just a fluke maybe?

TIA

EGR flow has nothing to do with muffler or cat. There was a problem with
Accords of that vintage with EGR passages clogging & there is a fix for it.
Take a look at the Honda-faq at tegger.com or call your local Honda dealer.
