91 Previa, how much for a head gasket job

Dbmethods 3 April 2005 02:24:03
My car has near 127,000 miles now.
How much is reasonable for a head gasket job?
It burns 1 quart of motor oil every 2000 miles.
It is smelly when closing down the garage door.

Smelly could just be oil leaks and burning off hot engine -- use Gunk engine
degreaser and take it to wand car wash or have it steam cleaned. Burning
oil is usually from worn valves/valve stems or seals or worn rings. Head
gasket usually causes overheating or coolant in oil or oil in coolant. Are
you thinking a new head gasket will solve the stated problems?

You are good. Actually, it could be caused by the receive valve gasket
which I don't have any clue on this. My mechanic is asking $135 for this
job. Does it sound reasonable?

Thanks

Until you clean it off good and see where the leak is - I wouldn't waste $
on it. It may just need a couple bolts tightened or even just a new drain
bolt washer.

Yes, you are 100% correct. The problem is at receive valve gasket
although I have no clue what it is. The mechanic asked about $135 for the
job. Does it sound right? This car is 1991 but runs great, should I just
go ahead to fix this.

Thanks
