anti rust in radiator

Stevie 30 April 2005 23:04:06
just replaced my radiator in 96 camry.

instead of putting in antifreeze, i just put in water and anti-rust
(prestone). i will put in antifreeze later when it starts getting cold.
any problems in doing it this way?

the water pump is not the original Toyota; it was replaced when timing belt
was replaced at 90000 miles with a new Oreilly water pump.

96 camry
135000 miles

Sure you will corrode, did you even use distilled water. Also you may
boil at the heads upon shutoff . Do it right

It's a good bet that you will overheat in traffic in hot weather. The
antifreeze is also a coolant. The conventional wisdom is to use 50%
Prestone or equivalent (some owners swear by the Toyota brand) and 50%
distilled water (available in the laundry products aisle of the
supermarket). The anti-corrosion additives are in the antifreeze but
they do deplete over time and thus the need to replace the mixture on
a regular schedule as outlined in the manual.
FWIW
YMMV

Yeah dude, when you add 'antifreeze' to water, it not only lowers the
freezing point of said liquid, but it also raises the boiling point. So, you
really need to put in antifreeze/coolant/ethyl-glycol.
