Re: OT Bush is being proved right once again

Leonard Caillouet 26 April 2005 04:40:21
I have always been mystified by the fear of nuclear power. Having grown up
among many petro-chem industry facilities, with one about a half-mile away,
it seems to me preferable to have a nuclear plant nearby, even if they are
storing waste there. Nuclear contamination is easily identifiable and
measurable and its effects are well known. Chemicals released, both in
normal production and in leaks and spills, amount to a far greater impact on
the environment and our health, and are very hard to track and measure.
Many of the effects are not well understood. I moved to an area away from
the chemical plants and near a nuclear facility and found health benefits
from the cleaner air. There were also clearly fewer people suffering from
cancer and other strange illnesses.

If one were to do some studies of cancer and other illnesses in proximity to
chemical plants, refineries, and nuclear plants, the nuclear plants would
likely be the healthiest to live nearby. I'd have one nearby instead of Dow
anyday. I bet you would also find the concentration of oncologists in areas
like the corridor from Baton Rouge to New Orleans, and the areas around
Houston to be higher than similar sized markets where there are not large
concentrations of chemical plants and refineries.

The dispersal of Mercury into the environment alone seems to me to be a good
enough reason to shift to nuclear power and away from coal. Greenhouse
gases are another.

Chernobyl.

30,000, generally considered to be a largely exaggerated number for the
Chernobyl disaster, compared to how many from chemical pollution? Of the
half-million or so cancer deaths each year in the US, what proportion are
from nuclear power related deaths compared to other forms of pollution?
Can't say can you? Well, having lived in close proximity to Dow Chemical
and been evacuated and told to shelter indoors many times for chemical
spills, and having seen hundreds of people who work in and live near similar
plants suffer from disease and illness clearly in excess of the norm, I'd
prefer to see my kids live near and work in a nuclear plant. Easy choice.

The fact is, we are going to use vast amounts of energy. The fact is, that
for all of its problems, nuclear is the safest source with the lowest impact
on health and environment of all, except perhaps wind generation. Certainly
among the large scale generation methods, it is easily preferable. But the
small minds who are scared of the big R will continue to promote fear.

By republicans?

Post a number and give a cite. Oh, wait, you can't.

Of the half-million or so cancer deaths each year in the US, what proportion are>from nuclear power related deaths compared to other forms of pollution?

It's a secret, obviously.
Can't say can you?

Nor can you. Thank Bush/Cheney for that.
Well, having lived in close proximity to Dow Chemical>and been evacuated and told to shelter indoors many times for chemical>spills, and having seen hundreds of people who work in and live near similar>plants suffer from disease and illness clearly in excess of the norm, I'd>prefer to see my kids live near and work in a nuclear plant.

I say you're exaggerating, if not outright lying. Post some PROOF.

Easy choice.

The fact is, we are going to use vast amounts of energy.

The fact is we don't NEED to.
The fact is, that for all of its problems, nuclear is the safest source with the lowest impact>on health and environment of all, except perhaps wind generation.

And solar power and other forms of non-fossil fuel energy. But the
current administration doesn't WANT that because it'll harm those who
lobby heavily and contribute greatly to the republican machine.

Certainly among the large scale generation methods, it is easily preferable.

Actually, it's not. Clean burning coal plants are much safer and
there's still plenty of clean burnable coal. But of course, it costs
MONEY.
But the small minds who are scared of the big R will continue to promote fear.

Smart minds bet on safer energy. Tell me, would you accept the spent
fuel rods in your backyard? Bet you wouldn't.

There are no nuclear reactor in the US of the type used a
Chernobyl and never has been. By the way the other reactor
generator at Chernobyl is still in operation

Besides, the operators were sort of fooling around one night and not
following procedures. It got out of hand and beyond their control and
caused a partial meltdown of the reactor core with a buildup of steam
pressure and subsequent explosive release of radioactive steam and
material.
