1982 Celica Horn Relay Location

P2P Xtasy 24 April 2005 23:58:05
A buddy has an old '82 Celica whose horn is barely audible and will need to
soon pass inspection. The horn buttons both work, so I'm guessing that the
likelihood is that either both horns are shot or the relay is or maybe there
is a bad connection. What would be your guess? I think my next move will be
to remove one horn to do a test, but I don't know where the relay is in case
it might need to be replaced. thx

Remove one horn (are there two???) and get an in-line fuse holder w/about
a 15A fuse. run a wire to the bracket of the horn and the other end to the
- side of the batt, and then touch the free end of the fused wire (you DID
attach one end of the wire to the + side of the horn, right?) to the +
side of the bettery. If it knocks yer socks off then the fuse is OK.
Repeat for the other horn. If not, go to the parts store and get horny...

Okay, anyone can surmise that you can check a horn by removing it to do a
test, but your requirement to utilize an inline fuse tells me volumes of
your logical thinking. If you reread my query, I included that as a
possibility (minus the fuse, for God only knows, what reason). The
unanswered question remains: Where is the friggin' relay? If you don't know,
perhaps you wouldn't mind publicly admitting it, or if you do, telling me
where it is!

Without a manual, I'm just guessing but you may want to check the fuse box
in the engine compartment to see if the relay is in there.

Ignoring the fuse - I think he was suggesting you start by checking the
horns. If they prove faulty then location of the relay is not required.

Alternatively a check on the power at the horns will show whether you have
any wiring problems.

And no I don't know where the horn relay is in a 1982 Celica - but it may be
in one of the fuse boxes (yes some cars have two)

Scott,

That's my point! Something with little or no resistance that is easily
snagged is gonna get burned!

Then it's a lot more than 9 volts, idiot.

I recall getting 'tickled' by about .5A at 300VAC...NOT phun!

Half an Amp @ 300VAC (or VDC either) can for sure shorten your
life.

Oh, and BTW, if 12VDC can't hurt you, try this: remove the Ground lug>from your battery. Hold it in one hand. Now, get a firm grip on the ->terminal of the battery, and ask a friend or spouse to crank the engine>over. THEN tell me 12VDC can't hurt...>

I will bet you my 2000 Corolla against anything of yours of equal
value, you must fly me there and back (plus airline passage for
my friend - to drive your vehicle back here). If you win then
I'll pay for all expenses plus you get free airline tickets to
pick up my car.

This will do NOTHING AT ALL...let me know when the bet is on...

And has anyone else noted that out esteemed MDT's are staying far away>from this discussion? I bet they're ROLFTAO for one reason or another...

I'm not very good at the "disconnect power at the source" part of the
directions, which explains the blue spot on the chrome on the oven door
handle of our electric stove that came from the bright spark that came when
the lead for one of the elements slipped from my sweaty fingers - doh!

When it comes to AC I am, but I rarely disconnect the - side of the
battery. Too much of a hassle...
