 IHA 1997 Avalon XLS and the air conditioning just quit working - fans,
temp control work but compressor clutch is not engaged. The fuse
checks good.

I would suspect it is low on refrigerant, but could not find what type
this system uses anywhere in the documentation. Will the new 134a
refrigerant work or do I need to have the whole system purged and
changed over?

134-a. You can confirm refrigerant type by looking for a label, either on
the underside of the hood, on the condenser, compressor, or radiator
support.
