 Ethics Committee Has No Ethics

GOP RULE CHANGES "THE END OF A CREDIBLE, EFFECIVE ETHICS PROCESS"

WASHINGTON, DC - After gutting the ethics rules to protect their
abuses of power, House Republicans have an opportunity today to set
things right again.

As a member of their own party suggested, it's time to close the
credibility gap.

Will the ethically challenged Republican leadership agree to the most
basic, fair ground rules before calling a meeting?

When will the Republicans stop protecting Tom DeLay?

It's time to come clean and stop the reckless abuses of power.

Rep. Joel Hefley (R-Colo.) and Rep. Alan B. Mollohan [D-WV] wrote in
today's Washington Post:

"But in the present Congress, a number of changes have been made to
the committee's rules, and we are deeply concerned that they may spell
the end of a credible, effective ethics process in the House.

A crucial step in putting the process back on track is to repeal these
changes, and we are co-sponsoring a resolution to do so...

"There should be no misunderstanding of what is at stake here, for
members and for the House as an institution.

In the days and weeks to come, all members will need to decide whether
they wish to continue to have a credible, effective ethics process, and
to then consider the actions and conditions necessary for such a
process to exist.

We believe that an essential first step is to repeal the rules changes
made at the start of this Congress."

Rep. Alan Mollohan (D-WV): "This is a process we can't abide. I
certainly don't want to participate in an ethics committee the rules of
which are so significantly flawed that they undermine the process and
bring into question the legitimacy of any decisions." [Washington Post,
4-13-05]
