hot that the engine gradually stopped running. i had it towed home and when
i got home the engine turned over fine but would not start. we are getting
spark and fuel to the spark plugs.but the engine wont start. Im not sure
where to look next any help would be great.

thanks, Jim

If it got hot enough to make it die, the head gasket is all but
guaranteed gone. The aluminum head itself is almost certainly warped, at
the very least, if not actually cracked. That assumes you got lucky and
that's "all" (as if that isn't bad enough...) that died. If you managed
to REALLY catch Uncle Murphy's eye, the rings also fried and/or ate the
unholy bejeezus out of the cylinder walls when the oil got hot enough to
stop acting as a lubricant. The possibility exists that the valves are
burtn to garbage, and it would be very realistic to assume that all the
bearings are scrap metal due to lack of lubrication. I'd also bet on the
main seals being at least severely unhappy, if not completely trashed.
There's also an off chance that you've got one or more holes melted in
one or more of the aluminum piston crowns.

In short, there's no way to be sure without opening it up and taking a
look, but I'd bet dollars to donuts you're looking at needing either a
new engine, or a *COMPLETE* rebuild (don't forget to have the block
magna-fluxed or otherwise checked for cracks, and plan on needing the
cylinders at least honed, if not outright rebored) from valve-cover to
oil pan on this one before the car is going to move under its own power
again.

There's a reason they say "stop and let it cool" if it overheats, and
you're now facing that reason... If you decide to try to get it rebuilt,
try to smile as you pay the man who does the repair work the price of
your expensive lesson in what NOT to do when the overheat light comes
on. And remember it well in the future.
