Car Turns Over But Won't Start Under Own Power

Scott Dalling via CarKB.com 2 May 2005 00:58:39
 I have a '93 Cavalier 3.1 that when I try to start it with the key it just
turns over no problem but won't even kick let alone start. If I get it
rolling and bum start it it fires up no problem and runs great. There is
fuel getting to the injectors when the key is on, but there is no spark
when turning the engine over with the key. I have tried changing the coil
pack already and that didn't do anything. If anyone has any ideas or has
experienced this before please help me out.

 Get a scanner on it and see if you have cranking rpms when trying to start,
if not there will be no injector pulse or spark, post back this info. Try
and check injector pulse by either listening to them click while cranking or
using a noid lite.

 I don't know anything about the Cavalier, but a problem I've run into more
than once on various cars has been a bad keyswitch that doesn't pass power
to the ignition in "crank" position, but does in "run" position. It might be
worth measuring the +12 on the + side of the coil with the keyswitch in
various positions, including cranking position.

Just a thought for what it's worth.
