Can harmonic ballancer be welded?

Wan A. Cat 29 April 2005 07:31:32
My harmonic balancer must have been a bit loose at some point; On changing
the timing belt, I noticed that the keyway is chewed up where the woodruff
key should engage.

Normally I would pick up a used one from a junkyard, but this car is too
much of an oddball for the DIY junkyardsyards. I tried a number of
full-service junkyards, but they want to sell the whole engine. (I don't
blame them. Not many customers for an engine with pieces missing.)

Repairing the damper seems like the next choice. Maybe a tig welder could
replace the missing metal, and a bit of grinding and filing? But I wonder
whether the rubber part could take the heat. Anyone have any experience with
this kind of patch? Can it be done? I would hate to learn another lesson the
hard way.

TIA

Would it make sense to hear that someone (I) tried it twice and goofed
up three times? You are working around a deceptively delicate piece of
equipment. The last thing you want to do is transfer the chewing to your
crankshaft. Got my fingers crossed for you that it hasn't happened yet.
Based on my exper., I'd smile while I bite the bullet and pay for a new
one--or a GOOD used one. Good luck, & hope this helps. s
