... the dealership *ALWAYS* charges more. please do not
equate more $$$ to equal better/higher quality work. i know
of MANY horror stories of shoddy dealership work. but at the
same time, many dealerships do good work ... and there are
many independents that do shoddy work - it's in your best
interest to ask around.

there's nothing wrong with using an independent. most of the
independents realize the dealers are charging high prices and
can act on that by offering reasonable rates with the same,
if not better, quality service.

remember, an independent is betting *HIS* sole reputation on
his work, not someone falling back on the corporation.

Savita:

Make sure you are comparing apples with apples. The dealer may be
including things that should be done at the same time, such as;

1. New Water pump - not rebuilt (if driven by the timing belt, which I
believe yours is).
2. Coolant (you have to drain it when replacing the water pump.
3. Other drive belts (they have to be removed anyhow so it makes sense
to replace them).
4. Tensioner and seals if applicable.

Neither.

The dealer is generally going to be the most expensive option and the
price you are quoting from them sounds about right for their service.

An *good* independent shop is your best bet but the rate this shop has
quoted you tells me that they are not planning to replace key
components that need to be replace such as the water pump. You can
skip these extras but if that water pump goes out tomorrow it will
take the new timing belt with it.

Ask for recommendations from some friends if you can and ask the shops
what they intend to replace as well as what the estimated total will
be.

First thing you need to do is give us a breakdown of the pricing.

Labor-wise, the dealer will be around $100/hr, while the independent may be
about $60 or more.

However, since there is a FOUR-HUNDRED dollar difference, I would be
seriously suspicious of that independent guy. You had better check to make
sure of:
1) Is he using an aftermarket timing belt or OEM?
2) Is he replacing the water pump? If so, is it aftermarket?
3) What else is he NOT replacing that the dealer would?

A price breakdown is crucial here. Without that NOBODY can tell you if
you're getting a deal or not. But for $185, that independent sounds
definitely fishy.

The labor to replace the belt only will be at least 4 hours. Typical
shop rates will make that about $240-320. The additional labor to
replace the water pump and tensioner should be maybe 20-30 minutes.
All the disassembly steps to remove the timing belt are the same as
for the water pump or tensioner, so it makes sense to have it done.

The parts alone should be somewhere in the range of $185. That would
include a belt, water pump, tensioner pulley, coolant, thermostat
(since the coolant is already drained), valve cover gasket, and
perhaps other belts.

Ask what they do. The labor for a Honda timing belt change is
very high. It's a design choice, but once done (properly) your car
should provide years of reliable performance.

That sounds like a low-ball bid. I'd be suspicious. My timing
belt change on my '95 Integra GS-R was about $500, although my
90K mile service included a valve adjustment and other assorted
service.

Does the nearby mechanic specialize in Hondas? You can also ask him how many
of these he has done. Speaking to other customers is also a good idea.
Also, when you compare the prices, are they for the exact same thing? It
could be the dealer is quoting you the price of the belt change plus a
water pump and the local mechanic is just quoting the price of changing the
timing belt.
