Ford Festiva no power

Rush 19 April 2005 08:51:54
 Greetings,

I've got a '92 Festiva, with fuel injection auto trans, that has no power
going up hills. It acts like it's "dogging out". It's ok on level ground,
but when you take off, or go uphill, it loses all power. It's better at
higher RPM's The former owner took off the cat to see if that was it.
also, the check engine light is not on.

Anybody got any ideas?

Tia, Rush

Here is the list from the troubleshooting guide in the Haynes
Festiva manual.

14. Engine lacks power.

1. Worn camshaft lobes
2. Bunred valves or incorrect timing.
3. Faulty spark plug wires or faulty coil.
4. Faulty or incorrectly gapped spark plugs.
5. Problem with fuel injection system.
6. Plugged air filtre.
7. Brakes binding.
8. Automatic transaxel fluid level incorrect.
9. Clutch slipping.
10. Fuel filtre clogged and/or impurities in the fuel system.
11. Emission control system not functioning properly.
12. Restricted exhaust system.

Any spelling mistakes are mine.

Not all of those would cause the symptons you noted.
It might be cheapest to see if the air and fuel filtres look dirty
as they have to filter more when you step on the gas. The
mechanical fuel pump on early (carburetted) models were weak. I
replaced mine when I noticed gas leaking.

have had two different cars have that same symptom. 91 cavalier with a bad
catalitic converter(part of the internals would roll backwards and block the
exhaust). 89 beretta with just a bad spark plug wire. check the simple
stuff first.
