Anything will "work until it fails". You should probably be able to> get around for quite awhile that way.>
Keep in mind that on your carbureted vehicle you will still be pumping> 1/4 of your fuel charge -unburned- into the atmosphere -- if you indeed> have a dead cylinder. Too easy, assuming a non-interference engine: Pull the valve cover,
disable the lifter on the intake, and jam the exhaust valve open. Button
up, and away you go. Maybe with a bit of an odd tone to the exhaust, but
<shrug> Who cares what it sounds like if it gets ya there? :)

Of course, if it's an engine that'll hit valves if they're open at TDC,
things get a shade more interesting...

Then again, that cylinder is already dead, so who cares if there's a
hole in the piston crown?

I believe it's an interference engine.>
I don't think it would require the exaust valve to be "jammed open" for> your scenario. Just remove the intake rocker and the worst thing that> would happen is the added suction during the intake stroke from a> closed combustion chamber. The chamber would be able to vent on exaust> and overlap.>
Toyota MDT in MO

Why not just leave both valves closed. The gas in the
cylinder will act like a big spring. Huffing and puffing
though an open valve will use more power.

It's a Subaru 360. The engine has oil injection, so no mixing is
needed. Early Saabs also used 2-stroke engines.
