Re: Aluminum head dings above cylinder- UPDATE

Joe S 27 March 2005 08:10:03
After about 15 hours of wrench time (disassembly and reassembly) I've
got a Tracer with an engine that purrs. I had not worked on this car
before, and had not done any serious engine work for 30 years. I could
probably do the whole job over again in 10-12 hours.

Total cost is $289 (new head cylinder-heads.com + $40 shipping + $105
(gasket set...should have gotten for $75 @ AutoZone)

I now just have to pray that it continues to run this well for another
year or two. My only worries are the damaged piston crowns, but I really
was not interested in getting any deeper into this, cost-wise, than a
new head, so they'll have to do.

Thanks to all that provided advice, esp. Comboverfish. What a rewarding
experience it was when that engine fired up...now my son and wife think
I'm Mr. Goodwrench and not just a tool! (-;

Thanks for the updates and pictures! Most people read their advice and> don't even respond with a 'thanks', so it is appreciated in kind.>
I guess you got the correct head as you were planning to -- and will> sell the pre-OBDII version head on Ebay?>

Yes, that's correct. Resell the wrong one. I got great service from
http://www.cylinder-heads.com in Clearwater.

New Casting head (complete and never on a car) was $289. I paid extra
for 3-day Select shipping so I could install it last weekend ($80
instead of $40 Ground which would have arrived the following Monday).

UPS missed by a day, so cylinder-heads.com promptly refunded my $80
shipping, and I still had it in time for the weekend. Best of both worlds!
