Install inline transmisson filter on Honda ?

Guest 22 March 2005 02:30:46
I want to install an inline transmssion filter along with a cooelr on
my Honda . I have seen the one piece type at www.jegs.com and the
remote spin-on types at www.permacool.com . I am little concerned
about pressure drop from either of these and would like some comments
and suggestions as to which sysem is preferable. - thanks

You have nothing to worry about as far as pressure drop is
concerned. The cooler and lines are relatively low
pressure. The fluid going to the cooler is returned to the
sump producing little pressure. The fluid in the cooler
circuit is not part of the high pressure application or
lubrication circuit. The biggest need for a filter is after
a catastrophic failure which may have released a bit of
trash and schrapnel into the cooler system. It has been my
preference to have the filter in the line to the cooler so
that the fluid is being filtered while as warm as possible
and filteration is at best efficiency with the least chance
of causing any significant restriction. Keep in mind that a
filter must be periodically changed or, it can cause more
harm than good unless you make sure your filter has a bypass
valve built in.

I have installed coolers previously and believe that they helped prolong
transmission life when I was towing. You have probably seen the tables
which indicate the decrease of transmission life with increasing
temperature. Heat is definitely the enemy.

At the time, I installed the coolers in series with the cooler in the
radiator, but later decided this might not be the best engineering since it
would present more resistance to flow than would a parallel arrangement.
But, I have no proof of this.

I don't particularly like the idea of an extra level of inline filtration,
for the same reason. From what I have observed, filtration, though
important, is not usually the biggest issue in transmission health.
