2000 Mercury Cougar

Nat 19 March 2005 20:35:46
I just bought this 2000 Mercury Cougar at a used dealer ship & sorry to
say have had nothin' but trouble with it and I have only had like two
months now! I was wondering why sometimes my car smokes under the hood
on the top left corner! It doesn't do it all the time, only sometimes.
I checked to see if it had water and oil & everything else. What
could this be? Can you please help me?

It's me again! I have one more question. Since I have purchased this
car the little light that has a picture of a wrench is always on and
never goes off. What does this mean? Thank you!

OK< OK I know I bug, but one more question?! The other day it was
realy nice & sunny & kind of warm and I went to wash my car and I
sprayed the waterhose on it to wet it down, and after I washed it and
everything I noticed a crazk in the front window over the drivers side
& half of the passengers side & it wasn't like that B-4 I wet it down!
Do you think it was because the window was to hot & the water from the
hose was kind of cold? Why would it just crack like that & do you now
approximately how much a new one or a used one would be? Thanks again!

It's a service reminder. It comes on automatically every 4,200 or
4,800 miles. Don't remember exactly. Resetting requires holding a
couple buttons for a few seconds. It's in the owners manual. Sorry I
don't remember the details. I got rid of my Cougar a couple years
ago.

If you have a sunroof, and it hasn't been fixed yet, it WILL break
($1,200 to fix). Also watch for bad fuel pumps (replace with a
Walbro, not Ford), bad alternators, fuel filler neck leaks, and some
potential brake problems.

Uh....regarding the fuel pump, maybe yes and maybe no. Ford had a
recall on SOME late Cougar fuel pumps. So if your model was under the
recall and you took it elsewhere to have it fixed, you threw away about
$250-$300. Ford will fix this for free. Also, when you drop the tank to
take out the fuel pump, Ford gives you a new and improved (allegedly)
filler neck connection so it won't leak.
BTW, don't ever try to replace this fuel pump without a car hoist and
another man to help you. It is a pain-in-the-butt to replace.

The cold water on hot glass caused it to crack. There was a microscopic
crack there to begin with, maybe caused by a rock or something, but the cold
water made it obvious.

I have a 2000 Mercury Cougar & everytime it rains my passenger side floor
board is ALWAYS soaked, i mean there's always @ least a couple of inches of
water. I've checked the rubber around the door and it seems to be fine, i
just cant seem to figure out where it's leaking...

the yellow light with the wrench that lights up is just a simple service reminder. It comes on every 3k miles to remind you to get oil changed. You can manually reset it by holding in the Select and...I believe the Reset buttons simultaneously for a few seconds. I can't remember which 2 buttons exactly...it's where the clock button is though.
