Reliability of 4A engine (corollas, novas)

Masospaghetti 17 March 2005 03:10:00
Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with the 4A- series of
engines (SOHC 8V) found in Corollas from 83(?) - 91 and Novas. I've been
told that its an iron horse from one mech and that its a piece of crap
from another.

Also found in Geo Prizm. Same engine with Twin-Cam head was installed in
MR2, Corolla GT-S, FX-16.

Common problems with that motor:
1) Valve guide oil seals wear, causing a puff of blue smoke on startup
2) Lack of oil changes plugs PCV valve, pumps oil into intake
3) Head gaskets fail due to neglected coolant changes
4) Twin-Cam exhaust manifolds crack

Generally good engine. Bottom end very strong. Does not like neglect.
Change oil every 3K or 3 months, without fail. With regular fluid changes,
will last ages.
