Car been sitting .. Low brake pressure

M.Burns 17 March 2005 01:56:07
Have an old mid-70's Vette that I only take out in Spring/Summer..
Typically every 2 or 3 yrs, the front rotors would leak after sitting thru
the winter. So last year I put stainless calipers on the front. Just took
it out, pedal felt a little mushy, and half way around the block, the
warning light came on. Before, usually when I would look under the car, I
could see fluid on one of the tires and it was obvious where the leak was.
Master cylinder does not appear to be leaking. I short stroked the pedal 8
or 10 times to pressurize, and the light went out. The master cylinder has
one end full, the other about 3/4 full. I'll check for spray or leaks on the
tires again later ..or 2nd test drive ..or pull the wheels when weather
warms up..
Question: Could lack of brake use be enough to cause the brake light to
come on ...just the first time out?

Nope, it has to see a failure to go on. Some kind of a pressure
difference had to happen.

I agree with Mike. Something is wrong and it needs to be dealt with.
It can be the master cylinder itself leaking, but since you see fluid on one
of the tires, it is most likely that you have a leak in the brake line or in
the caliper assembly.

You can usually smell brake fluid inside the cockpit if the master cylinder
is leaking into the booster or into the firewall.

To clarify, I have NOT seen any fluid on the tires (as I had in the past).
I have now taken two more careful trips around the block. The warning light
comes on before I return and still have the mushy pedal. After both trips I
checked the reservoir and the level looks unchanged. Also no sign of leak
around the master cylinder, or on the floor along the length of the vehicle.
It seems more like there is air trapped in the lines, rather than losing any
fluid. But I still intend to jack it up, pull all 4 wheels and watch each
cylinder (as well as the metal lines) as someone pumps the brakes. The joys
of a 30 year old car.
