Ford- No Start in Park

McL 15 March 2005 01:14:22
 I've got a 92 E-250 with the E40D trans. This morning not a sound when I
tried to start it. Put the battery charger on it, no help. Tried the old
hammer to the starter, no help. I could hear the relay or solenoid clicking
but no starter sound. Don't know why but I put it in Neutral & it started
right up. This has happened three more times today. Twice it started
normally in Park. Three other times I had to start it in Neutral. Any ideas
as to what is going wrong?

My first guess would be a bad neutral safety switch.

Sounds like a bad solenoid and a set of coincidences. If your relay
really is fully energizing and the car intermittently won't start, then
the relay contacts are probably badly worn. If the relay doesn't click
at all or sounds weak, then I would suspect the neutral safety switch.
