2000 GMC Safari AWD Van not starting (sometimes)

Ken 8 March 2005 06:04:54
 GMC Safari Intermitting starting problem

Here is the situation, 60,000 miles on our van. 4.3 Liter that has
been fine until now.
Condition: no start sometimes, usually in the morning, and after a no
start, it will not start for a few days. Then it starts and run fine,
with no error codes.

Parts replaced, Wires, Plugs, Rotor and Cap, Fuel Filter and Crank
Position Sensor. I started in yesterday, let it run for 30 minutes and
no errors codes.

This is not a dependable transportation for my wife and little ones to
ride around in as we live in the country. Any help would be
appreciated.

 Ken,

It maybe a fuel pump problem. The fuel pump gradually looses its
ability to generate sufficient pressure required because of wear on the
pump motor commutators. This is a common problem as searches on the web
will confirm.

One good test to confirm the source of the problem is to try jumpering
the van with another car. The higher voltage of the running boosting
car is sufficient to get the pump to provide the necessary pressure.

I had this problem with my 1997 Astro van at 180000 km.

Thanks! I'm looking for a way to attach a fuel pressure gauge to check
pressure.

The Fuel pressure connection is on the inlet hose going into the top of
the fuel meter body. The fuel meter body has six fuel lines, coming out
at the bottom, one for each cylinder.

I doubt if measuring the fuel pressure is definitive since the failure
is marginal. Your reading will probably indicate a reading that is on
the lower end of the acceptable range. In this marginal state, a
difference of a psi or less might make or break a successful start.

Based on a study by Jeff Bach on this problem, written up in an article
available on the web, a fail to start state of his vehicle was measured
at 52 psi, 54 psi during cranking with a boosting assist from a vehicle
which allowed it to start, and 56 psi after having started.

A definitive diagnosis of the fuel pump failure can be had by monitoring
the current draw of the fuel pump using a scope.

Thanks for the info! I'm replacing the fuel pump today as I took off
the new filter to attach a tee for measuring pressure, and found a lot
of copper color flakes in the fuel. I assume that the gears in the
pump are powered metal, and what ever plating was on them is now in the
fuel lines. I'm also replacing the lines to the filter as it was
rusty. I post the results of changing these parts as soon as I know
if it sloves the problem.

Thanks everyone for you experience and input!

Which "coil" are you referring to?

Has the starting problem been resolved?

What highway problem are you referring to?

David

p.s. problems are easy to find; solutions take a bit more time.

Has this issue been resolved? I have a very similar problem
with my Safari.
I've had it in the shop two or three times and here I am with the same
prblem again. I've replaced the MAP sensor and that seemed to help for a
while. But the problem has come back. Any one have any Ideas??? Thanks
Darren

I have a similar problem, but it happens while I am driving ... my 2000 Safari AWD will just shut off! The first time it happened, it cranked right backup and was fine for a few hours, then I shut it off at a cliets and came out 30 minutes later and it wouldn't crank for about 30 minutes. Then it ran fine for 3 days until today when it shut off while I was driving and never cranked back up ...
Any ideas would be appreciated!

when you turn your ignition key on, you should hear your fuel sending unit come on. I fyou do not hear the fuel sending unit this will be the problem. The fuel sending unit is located on top of the fuel tank. It is not a difficult job but a little time consuming.
