removing skunk odor

Guest 23 February 2005 08:43:16
 Hello:

First time posting. The other evening, a baby skunk crossed my path as
I was driving through town. I didn't want to hit the animal so I
slowed right down to a stop. Well, for my efforts, the skunk sprayed
the underside of the car & the smell permeated the entire interior. I
took it through a car wash & the tech poured some bleach into the
sprayer for the undercarriage. This didn't do much good. I bought an
item that contained charcoal & something called odor be gone that
aborbs the odor. Any other suggestions to rid my nice car of this
odor?

John

It's oil based. Detergent usually works on dogs. I had to wash my
former dog on a couple of occasions.

1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4cup baking soda
1 teaspoon liquid soap

Mix ingredients in a plastic bucket and wash affected object, including
man or beast.

For a car you might need to double the recipe and spray it on with
your kid's super-soaker or similar squirting device. Often it takes
two applications.

Old home remedy for dogs, people and anything you can spray down:
Tomato juice.
I doubt you want to use it on your upholstery, but the underside of the
car could be sprayed down with it. Use a LOT of it and let it sit for
about 10 minutes, then hose it off with a lot of water. Don't forget the
tires - they're actually pretty porous and can hold a good stink for
some time if they aren't scrubbed down.

Tomato juice is safe on your skin, so I doubt it'll damage anything
under a car. Dogs have very sensitive skin and it doesn't harm them to
get a tomato bath when they 'discover' a skunk. =8O

Cheers,
- Jeff G

The Mythbuster guys proved that this does NOT work
The only thing that worked well was

1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4cup baking soda
1 teaspoon liquid soap
