Power Window Sticking - 96 Chevy Pickup

Bob 21 February 2005 18:06:24
Having trouble determining why my driver's side power window sticks in the
up position (96 Chevy K1500). The first time I took apart, I thought one of
the rollers was binding in the track. I looked like it could get cocked in
the wide spot at the end of the track (flared a bit to ease assembly I
assume). Thought maybe when I slammed the door it popped into the wide spot
and got in a bind. While playing with the assembly on the bench, I though I
could reproduce this so I squeezed the flare tighter.

Stuck again a few days later. Pulled screws out of the pannel and could see
the rollers. Looked like all were in the tracks OK but window still would
not move until I dropped the panel/motor assembly a bit. Then the motor
would drive the window down. I pulled the motor appart and polished the
brush pads with 400 grit paper even though they really didn't look bad. Put
together and slammed door 5-6 times and worked ok.

Now, stuck again. Any suggestions on what is the common problem and how to
troubleshoot and fix?

Thanks,
bb

Perhaps a detail description of the symptoms would be more helpful.

I know Astro/Safari vans of that vintage have problems with power window
motors. The problem occurs when the overload protective strip built
into the motor fails open at a much lower current, causing the window to
stop momentarily until the protective strip cools and then allowing
the window motor to continue working again.

Thanks for the comments. The symptom is the window won't roll down. If I> push the down button with the door open, the dome light will dim so it is> getting power. I have pulled it appart 3 times so far.>

Don't know it it is mechanically sticking or if the motor doesn't have> enough torque to get it started down. What exactly is the regulator? Is> this an electrical component rivetted to the door panel or is ti the gears> and mechanism?>
Thanks again for any advice.>

One more "symtom" is it rolled down this morning. After unsticking the last
time, it worked for a couple of days. The first day it wouldn't roll down
it was raining. Hasn't rained in several days so maybe moisture is a
contributor. Weatherguy says it will rain Tuesday evening so will try it
every day and see if it stops Wednesday morning...

Thanks again for any advice.>
The regulator is what I call the gear and lever mechanism that the> motor drives to lift the window. It is the entire metal assembly> including the "arms" with the rollers, the return spring if equipped,> and possibly the track that the rollers ride in. GM might call it> something different.>
You need to determine if the motor is shorting when this problem is> happening. Either the regulator is OK and the motor is failing> (shorting causing excess current draw and no motion) or the> regulator/window is sticking and the motor can't budge it. I can't> help with this part of the diagnosis.>

Thanks for the note but that is what I am trying to figure out. How to
determine which it is, the motor or the mechanism (regulator maybe, if that
is what it is called). Does anyone know what the usual failure is?
