gas guzzling and no leaks

Guest 1 February 2005 20:03:25
 Hello

My 1991 Cutlass goes through gas like crazy lately with no smell of gas
or apparent leaks. I recently replaced the exhaust manifold and the
spring bolts do not form a perfect seal. Could this be tricking the
computer into running a super rich mixture. I have noticed this problem
a lot more since it has gotten cold in central PA. Thanks for any help

What does "goes through gas like crazy" mean to you?

What do you mean by the spring bolts "do not form a perfect seal"? Can you
detect an exhaust leak? A leak upstream of the O2 sensor will drive the
O2S lean and cause an overly-rich mixture.

Sounds like you've diagnosed your own problem. Fit the exhaust
properly. Good luck, s

 Hi Daniel,

It was getting about 10 mpg on a 4cyl. The spring bolts hold the
exhaust pipe to the mainifold and this seal is downstream from the O2
sensor. There is a flaw in the exhaust pipe where it does not seal all
the way; it will if I stud bolt this pipe to the manifold, but this
stress causes the mainfold to crack over time (3rd manifold in 3 years.
There is a slight leak that is most noticeably when I start the car,
then it goes away when it warms up. Hope this helps.

Bob

That's definitely very low.

Then that's not driving your O2S lean, and your problem probably lies
elsewhere.

Time for some systematic diagnosis.
