Renault Clio (1994) Manual Transmission problems

David 30 January 2005 23:11:34
 Hi,
I have recently had the gearbox changed since the flush bearings went.
There are now problems sometimes - not every single time, with
selecting gears - mostly 1 and 3, although also 4. The replacement
gearbox was changed also, having the same problems, a day or two
apart; so i don't think it is the gearbox/synchros itself.

It will also "partly" go into gear then be "pulled" back sharply (into
gear) when releasing the clutch. Other times when trying to engage
gear it will crunch (with clutch fully down), if you attempt to force
it.

It will normally go into gear fine, although it will happen perhaps
twice in five minutes of driving. (Have to slow right down, try other
gears) - presumably this is just the same effect of double clutching.

Does anyone have any ideas of what is wrong with this? The haynes
manual suggests:

- the gear synchros (unlikely, been changed twice, does it in most
gears).
- the clutch (no easy way of testing?)
- the gear linkage

The strange thing is the "randomness" of it; it doesn't seem to be any
particular gear that it happens in; as if something is getting stuck.

The gear linkage was played with today - within the tolerances as the
manual lists. All gears are available.

I have just been out in it:

It wouldn't go into three, so i tried putting into four - it went into
four straight away, so i moved back to three (without lifting the
clutch back up throughout this), and it managed to go straight in.

It hasn't done this before, not until the gearbox was replaced - (it
was replaced due to a leak, seized up, flush bearings went).

Hi, i have just bought a 1996 renault clio 1.4 rt, there is a problem with the brakes, when pushing the brake pedal down to apply the brakes, u have to push almost to the floor to get any response, but other times it is fine and the brakes are respnsive as they are supposed to be, garages cannot find a fault, regards
