Ford recall - engine-off fires - 800,000 vehicles

Henry 28 January 2005 15:07:12
MICHIGAN: RECALL FOR PICKUPS AND S.U.V.'S The Ford Motor Company is
recalling nearly 800,000 pickups and sport utility vehicles because the
cruise control switch could short-circuit and cause a fire under the
hood, the company said. The recall affects about 792,000 Ford F-150
pickups, Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators from the 2000 model
year. Also affected are 2001 F-Series Supercrew trucks that were made at
the same time. Ford will notify owners of the recall in February, and
dealers will deactivate the cruise control switch until the company has
enough replacement switches. (AP)

[These fires can occur when the vehicle is shut off and parked in your
garage. See http://www.flamingfords.info website for photos of some
burnt cars. Website also suggests that the problem could affect other
Ford models and years.]

What IS it with Ford and fires? I mean REALLY! This has been going on
for 50 years it seems like. Ford's my second-preferred brand behind
Chrysler, but sheesh!

There have been 36 incidents reported to NHTSA.

<etc.>

Right on cue, there's Ed to explain-away the latest batch of Ford fires,
saying other makers have exactly the same problems in exactly the same
proportion, and all the bad publicity Ford gets is because of...um...an
intergalactic super double-secret conspiracy to hate Fords.

*snooze*

I figure it's one of two things.

1) the mainstream news media is stuck in a time where 95% of the vehicles
on the road were of domestic manufacture. They think the three people
driving toyotas aren't worth the press time/space.

2) They have a bias against the domestics.

The only japanese make recall that got any significant play was the
seatbelt issue blamed on 'fat' americans. Few others even it make to tv /
radio.

CBS seems to go after Ford (60s mustangs might catch fire if rear ended
at 70mph) and NBC after GM (side mounted fuel tanks may cause fire if
igniters are used for that purpose) the way consumer reports went after
susuki (a samurai will roll over if you try really hard to make it happen).
