Truck Cuts Off Question

John 20 28 2000 28 January 2005 04:07:18
Hi, my 1996 Sonoma just cuts off sometimes when I am driving. After
this happens, the car will not start. When I turn the key, it acts
like it wants to start, tries, but just won't. If I wait about 10 - 15
minutes, the car will start. Sometimes, I am lucky and it will start
up immediately.

This only happens intermittently and the mechanic said if it started
when he got it that he couldn't do anything. I understand that as
there would be no problem! But every couple of weeks, maybe a month,
then the car will cut off, not when stopped, just while driving it, 30
- 40 miles an hour, the car just cuts off.

Things in the car start blinking (on the display) sounds clicking (not
when turning key.)

Just strange. Hoped someone might have some idea where to start.
Thank you.

(I posted this in a older group, sorry, no traffic there.)

This sounds like an electrical problem.
I mean you only have 3 systems to consider
1) ignition
2) fuel
3) air supply

so out of those three, your "blinking" display sounds like you're
losing electrical continuity to your vehicle / ignition system.
Just strange. Hoped someone might have some idea where to start.>Thank you.

With the electrical system. Starting at the batter and/or alternator,
and working through the system, checking cables, connectors,
continuity. You could even have corrosion on your terminals and even
with a snug-fitting cable clamp, you could have enough of a voltage
drop between the two to cause problems.

Put a lead from your voltmeter on your cable clamp and the other lead
on the battery terminal. You should see 0 volts DC. Keep watching
that while someone cranks the engine, you should still see 0 volts.
If you see anything, clean the connectors.

And what is your battery voltage anyhow. Has anybody ever looked at
that? What is it with the engine off, and engine on?

Lg

No to the second last question. I too thought it was more electrical
than anything. The battery meter in the display seems to indicate a
normal voltage, but that is misleading I am sure. Not even sure how to
check the voltage. But I do have a meter, so I guess it's like
checking any other battery's voltage. Thank you and I will check what
you said.

And question rolls over answer, killing it instantly. -Dave
