Clifford Alarm Draining my Battery?

Eric McCaughrin 20 January 2005 11:03:20
My (used) car has a Clifford "Arrow-2" alarm installed. I suspect the
unit is defective and draining the battery. If the car is not started for more
than a few days, the battery goes dead.

To track down the dead-battery problem, I've done the following:
1. Replace battery
2. Have new battery tested
3. Checked voltage output from the alternator (was 14.5 volts as expected)
4. Measured current drain on battery when car is switched off.

Regarding #4, the current drain was only 30 milliamps. However, the
alarm system has been behaving very oddly. It will sometimes not unlock
the doors when it is supposed to, and today I had to "reboot" the car (i.e.
disconnect the battery) because the alarm system would not switch off. Thus, I
am
thinking the alarm system is shorting to ground at random times.

To test my theory, I am wondering if there is some way to completely
disconnect the alarm system? I tried "disarming" it, and the battery
still died after a few days -- but even if the alarm is disarmed doesn't mean it
isn't drawing current (particularly if it is defective).

So, is anyone familiar enough with the "Arrow-2" that can give me pointers
as to what wire I can pull so that the alarm is fully deactivated without
disabling the car? I did find a lead patched into the + terminal of the battery,
but I could not figure out what that particular wire was for.
