Adjusting valves cont.

So....how forgiving is the adjusting on this engine? My book says to just
adjust on 1/4 turns waiting to adjust again after each 10 sec. interval and
adjust until the clack has stopped? This seems imprecise.
Thanks Rojo

Ya know, the guys that wrote the book might just be on to something
there.... ;-)

The valves are hydraulic. This calls for 0 lash usually. One easy way
to find 0 lash is to do what the book says....

You're just adjusting them until you get them in the range that the
hydraulic adjuster can accomodate - it will take that to zero lash
automatically.

It's a chevy, for petes sake, do it static. Get to TDC on the one your
doing (I like to take off the cap & point the rotor to each one),
loosen them till they slop, tighten them back slowly till you feel no
play, then go another half to 5/8 turn. I've done a bazillion this way
with no problems.Saves all the oil mess when trying to do 'em with it
running. Good luck.

I'm aware they've used that style of valve adjustment since at least 1955.
Why choose such a messy method?
