Re: Going reverse with engine off (did I ruin my car?)

Sprint cars, which are direct drive and have no clutch or starter, are
push started. Because a push can provide FAR more torque than a starter
motor, and because these engines use FI and are set VERY rich, there is
a worry about hydraulic lock from a leaking injector. Many teams push
the car by hand backwards a few feet before letting push truck push car
off. So they are turning engine over backwards on purpose.

Also, when starting radial aircraft engines, some people worry about
hydraulic lock and like to pull engine through a full revolution or so
by hand. If they can pull it through it doesn't have enough fluid in
cylinders to lock (hydraulic lock can damage pistons and rods). Now,
most mechanics pull them through forward, but some feel it is better to
pull them through backwards, because they believe that if there IS
hydraulic lock, turning engine backwards will clear cylinder. In any
case, I know of no one damaging an engine by pulling it through backward.

doubt it caused your problem, don't you have "N" on the selector?

I stand by my previous answer, if he inadvertantly selected "R" and
rolled *forward* and his car is such that the transmission will drive
the engine, he could have rolled the engine backwards and jumped time.
That's the first thing I would check, and it's fairly easy to do - just
slap a timing light on it as the vast majority of engines have the
distributor driven by the cam. (if it's a new car with a flying magnet
type crank trigger, of course this will tell you nothing.)

Since everything in the automatic transmission is
hydraulically operated and applied, it should not be
possible to turn the engine without the engine running. The
transmission pump is operated only with the engine running
since it is converter driven. Whatever happened to the
engine is not related to what you did when you moved the
vehicle. The big problem with moving a vehicle with an
automatic is lack of lubrication to the transmission
internals without the engine runing to drive the pump. That
is why you do not tow a vehicle with an automatic for any
significant distance or at significant speed. This can
apply in many cases even with the engine running.
