While what you say about fuel economy, and the "standard equipment" status
of the A/C/ compressor cutout is absolutely true, I do believe the A/C
compressor cutouts are provided to keep people with limited depth
perception from having a head-on with oncoming traffic by providing a
fraction more horsepower for passing.
