Almost non-existent heat Wayne 19:57:46
I recently purchased a 99 Saturn SL 5spd SOHC from a private owner. I am
having problems with the heater. I can drive 25 miles and still have almost
no heat. It takes forever to clear a frosty windshield. The previous owner
said he flushed the cooling system and put in a lower thermostat. Would
that be the problem with the heater or is it unrelated? If it is a
thermostat, where is it located on the Saturn? Thanks in advance for your
help!

Re: 2004 Vue Oil Change Light Reset Guest 16:07:36
I can only tell you that on my '06 Vue, you must turn the key to the on
position (NOT starting the car) and press the gas pedal 3x within 5 seconds
of turning the key on to reset. If successful, the oil light will blink.
Then turn the key off. I have to do this myself after every change as you
can't trust that they did it. I had the dealer change my oil once and said
they reset it, but the light came on after 3K. I have onstar sending me oil
life notices once a month and it indicated they did not reset it. My point
is that if you do not change your own oil, always reset the indicator when
you get back in the car, whether they said they did it or not...it won't
hurt..

Good luck

I just changed the oil, after 8000 miles of ownership, in my 2004
Saturn Vue. How do I reset the light? The dealer only had a 2003 Vue
manual to give me, and the reset button has changed.
I changed the oil when it started staying on after the engine was
started. Will it stay on steady eventually? I figured after 8,000
miles, it wouldn't hurt the change the oil anyway, whether it needed
it or not.

Re: 1997 SC2 hood rusting from underneath Oppie 20:39:56
Try this stuff or one of the similar formulations of rust reformers
Permatex 81849 - Permatex Rust Treatment
http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10002_125086_-1

Loctite Extend
http://www.loctiteproducts.com/products/category.asp?catID=13

Degrease the surface and throughly dry. Remove any loose flaking rust and
then spray or brush on the compound (mind the ambient temperature). Should
take two coats and the compound changes from a milky white to a black
wherever there was rust. This will seal and stabilize the rusted area. Can
be left as is or painted over following drying period.

Hope this helps

My 1997 Saturn SC2's hood is rusting from underneath. I guess it's
been happening for a while, because there are a few spots where the
top surface is bubbled up. Is there anything I can do to prevent it
from getting worse, and can I replace the hood myself? Where would I
get a replacement hood and do they come in colors or would I have to
paint it to match?
Thanks to anyone who can help me come up with a reasonable solution to
this problem.

Re: '96 Saturn SL1 Stalling Problem Refinish King 20:35:21
 Hi:
A crank sensor will not set a code!

Throwing parts at a car is a bad thing, because I do this for a living. The
first thing to do is to get someone with a good scanner. That gives readouts
in real time.

To me, it sounds like you've got a loose or corroded connection from the
crank sensor, to the ignition module, or a loose connection on the module.

Also, it can be the fuel pump is loosing prime. You'll have to test fuel
pressure and volume. I don't remember the pressure specs on a Saturn, but
the volume should be 1 pint in 10 seconds or less.

I hope this helps.

I have a '96 SL1 that keeps stalling! It usually happens when the car
hasnt been run for a few hours. It will run for 20sec then turn off
like I turned off the key! I can hear the fuel pump prime, so I dont
think its the pump. If I let it sit for a little while it will
usually start back up and be good for the rest of the day. Yesterday
it did not want to start back up. When it did, it eventually stalled
again. Last night I ran it in the driveway for a couple hours with no
problems after it stalled and I started it back up. Today I tried to
start it and it just turns over. I have had people tell me many
different things. Crank sensor, bad gas, weak pump, bad computer...
Where should I start? The engine light does not come on. If the
crank sendor was bad, wouldnt I get a code? HELP!!!!!

I typically get about 300 miles per tank (15 gallons) in a mix of

2003 Vue Engine Fan HyperCube33 04:08:00
I've noticed that my cooling fan kicks in excessively - like when the gauge
reads that the engine is at 'normal' temperatures. It only stays on for a
few moments, usually when I'm idling (like in a drive thru) and shuts off -
and it doesn't appear to lower engine temp like with my SC2. I can imagine
that the engine is warm after driving on the highway, and having it kick in
that long should cool it down sufficiently - but I'm not seeing any change
in the gauge and it does it when the engine reads cool too.

Also I'm hearing a clicking noise from 'under' the car when at stop lights -
I think I saw someone else once post something about it and everyone blew it
off as exhaust system contraction - but it definitely doesn't sound like
that and will come on when the car is idling on my lunch break in 25'F
weather - definitely not cooling down from a long drive as it shouldn't be
changing temp at all (unless the fan is causing it?) - also the lights dim
momentarily with the click noise. It happens about once a minute to once
every few minutes.

Re: Starter not working - help? Oppie 00:28:42
Since all the lights go out on attempted start - look first at the battery
terminals for corrosion. Take them off and clean if necessary. How old is
the battery? 3 to 5 years is about normal lifetime.
Check the battery charging with a voltmeter when running - should be about
13.8V and about 12V when off. With engine off, measure battery voltage (at
the battery) while switching on headlamps. If the voltage drops more than
.25V, battery is bad.

There is another possibility in that the starter is shorted or the engine is
somehow jammed from turning over. Either of those will cause an enormous
cranking current that will dim the lamps. Don't sweat this yet until the
battery and terminals are checked first. If the starter needs replacing- it
will come with a new solenoid.

If you know someone with one of those jump-start battery packs - try that
out to see if it starts any easier. Make sure you get good contacts on the
clip leads. (I bought one a couple of years ago when I got stuck in the
boonies with a dead battery and a sick wife)

the key, all the dash lights go on but the starter doesn't engage. If I

Does it sound like a solenoid or starter problem? Thanks.

1998 SW2 clunking noise from front suspension? Poptart 19:32:58
Looking for a bit of help. I have a 1998 SW2 that I have had since
new. It has about 125,000 miles on it and still going strong. Just
recently it started developing a occasional 'bangy' clunk when
turning.

I was thinking CV joint but I think that would be more than one clunk
(it would be more of a series of clunks). Driveability is totally
unfazed. It seems to be coming from the wheel well areas but I can't
localize it.

I had the car in for a check-up about 6 months ago and they replaced
the Tie rod ends and the right lower control arm. They have always
done exceptional work so I doubt it's related.

Thoughts, suggestions?

I'm wondering about the sawybar bushings at this point.

Replacement tires for Vue... Guest 22:12:50
 Hi -

I have a '06 Vue (4cyl, 5-speed) with the standard stock steel rims. I
have 45K on it now and I'm starting to get increasing road noise. It's very
mildly starting to sound like I'm driving with off road tread. As I had the
same happen on my old Saturn, I'm suspecting the tires are reaching the end
of the road (no pun intended). (because for Saturn's sake, it better not be
the bearings or something!) All my driving is highway and this is the first
time in my life that I've ever replaced tires before brakes! (they're only
about halfway worn...)

Anyway, I'd like to go with a little wider tire....Something similarly as
wide as what's on the 6cyl Vue's...Does anyone know what the maximum width
tire I can go with on the existing rims? Not that I'd go that wide, just
want a range. I'm not going to change to diameter, just a little wider...

Of course, suggestions are welcome, but $ is a major factor....

Thanks in advance...

Repairing drivers seat on '97 SC2 -- anyone done it ? Jimhigh66 22:44:06
(We'd like to hear from someone who's done it.)We need to re-sew the seam
of a leather seat -- the seat-seat, not the back.
It appears the seat can be removed by removing 4 bolts and disconnecting
an electrical connector. I don't immediately see how to remove the side
trim or if that's really necessary. It looks like removing the seat cover
should be fairly easy -- not so sure about reinstalling it.

MI5 Persecution: Why do you think MI5 are responsible? (7553) Guest 11:16:29

Why do you think MI5 are responsible?

The question of who is ultimately responsible for this eight-year
harassment is one which is very difficult to answer, as the persecutors
have never clearly made their identities known to the persecutee. However,
I believe I am correct in attributing the continuing victimisation to
elements of the British Security Service MI5, and in this article, I will
try to explain the reasons for this belief.

The British internet magazine ".net" featured my website on page 17 of
their March 1998 issue (number 42). Their review kindly describes it as an
"excellent site" and gives some details of what the net surfer will find
there. Should you wish to reply to this article you can do so;

"When did you first suspect MI5 were responsible?"

Over Easter 1995 I went to see a local solicitor in London with a view to
talking to the police about the harassment. Soon afterwards I did go to my
local police station in Clapham and spoke to an officer there. The
solicitor made a comment which suggested to me that the persecution I had
been experiencing may have been organised by an intelligence service.

Up to this point, I did not have any clear idea as to who was behind the
harassment. Only their agents were visible, in the media, on television
news programmes, and on the radio; in the workplace, where things said at
my home were repeated verbatim; and in some cases abuse in public and
during travel, for example on the trip to Poland in June 1992 which I have
already described.

Both from the fact that widely disparate individuals and organisations
were employed as agents in the campaign against me, and from the fact that
an entity would be required to marshal their resources in the areas of
spying on my home and giving gathered information to their agents, it was
clear to me that a single entity was responsible for carrying out the
campaign. Yet from June 1990 until Easter 1995 I did not have a clear idea
of who might be responsible. I guessed that perhaps some private
individual or group of persons who saw themselves as my enemies had
perhaps paid private detectives to organise the harassment. Alternatively,
since the campaign had started in the media, I made a far-fetched
supposition that perhaps it was an ad-hoc group of media people who had
set themselves up in opposition to me. After Easter 1995 I saw that these
guesses were wrong, and I made an I believe much more accurate estimate as
to who my enemies really are.

"Why couldn't a private group be behind the persecution?"

There are several reasons why a private individual or group would not be
behind this campaign.

Quantity of resources / Money. Here is what one Usenet (internet
newsgroup) participant had to say (several years ago) on the topic of how
much money it would cost just to keep the surveillance going.

PM: >But why? And why you? Do you realize how much it would cost to keep
PM: >one person under continuous surveillance for five years? Think about
PM: >all the man/hours. Say they _just_ allocated a two man team and a
PM: >supervisor. OK., Supervisor's salary, say, #30,000 a year. Two men,
PM: >#20,000 a year each. But they'd need to work in shifts -- so it would
PM: >be six men at #20,000 (which with on-costs would work out at more
like
PM: >#30,000 to the employer.)
PM: >
PM: >So, we're talking #30,000 x 6. #180,000. plus say, #40,000 for the
PM: >supervisor. #220,000. Then you've got the hardware involved. And
PM: >any transcription that needs doing. You don't think the 'Big Boss'
PM: >would listen to hours and hours of tapes, do you.
PM: >
PM: >So, all in all, you couldn't actually do the job for much less than
PM: >a quarter million a year. Over five years. What are you doing that
makes
PM: >it worth the while of the state to spend over one and a quarter
million
PM: >on you?

A private individual or group would not spend over a million pounds to
verbally torture a victim without some financial motive or gain. Private
industry is driven by the profit motive, and there is no financial profit
to be had from carrying out a campaign in this way. If a private
enterprise were behind it then they would have taken direct physical
action a long time ago.

State enterprises, on the other hand, can afford to be wasteful, since
they are funded by the taxpayer. They do not have to show a money
profit. The employees or contractors employed by a state organisation such
as MI5 are driven by their own personal profit motives, to make the most
money out of their employers for the longest period of time. MI5 is funded
to the tune of #150M p.a.; even a few hundred thousand a year would to
them be affordable if their managers could convince themselves of the
necessity of what they were doing.

Quality of resources / Technical resources - electronic and other
surveillance. In summer 1994 a reputable and competent private detective
agency was employed to conduct a counter-surveillance sweep of my home in
London. They charged us over #400 for this, conducted a thorough search
for radio transmitting devices, hard-wired "probe" microphones and also
tested the telephone line. They found nothing. This was not altogether
surprising, since it had been made very clear to me that there were bugs
in my home; the "buggers" would not have made this clear unless they had
felt their bugs were of sufficient sophistication as to be safe from
detection.

But there is another lesson to be gained from the failure of the private
detectives to find anything. The agency employed was one of the most
reputable in London. They were employed on the principle of "setting a
thief to catch a thief", for if the harassment were being carried out by
private detectives, as I then believed, then surely another set of private
detectives would be able to find the bugs that they had planted. That
these "private eyes" were unable to find anything, and that the harassers
were confident that they would not be able to find any bugs, points to the
harassers being an order of sophistication above a private agency, and
leads me again to believe that a state intelligence service is responsible
for the surveillance and harassment.

Quality of resources / Technical resources - Interception of Postal
service. In summer 1994 when I emigrated to Canada to try to escape the
harassment, I wrote letters home to my family and friends in London. Quite
soon after my arrival in Canada, the harassers were able to find precisely
where I was staying. The only way I can see of "their" being able to find
out my new address was by interception of my letters to the UK.

Later in 1994, I conducted an experiment to see if my letters home were
indeed being read. In a letter home I wrote of being depressed and talked
in vague terms of suicide. I deliberately chose this topic, since I
believed it was the outcome my harassers were trying to achieve, and that
if they read the letter, they would "echo" its contents. Sure enough, soon
afterwards there were two incidents of people shouting "suicide" at me in
public places in Canada.

It is inconceivable for a private agency to have the ability to intercept
postal mail. The state security service on the other hand is well known to
engage in these activities.

Quality of resources / Access to Media. One of the strangest aspects of
this case is the access "they" have to the broadcast and print media. I
still do not understand what could persuade newscasters such as Martyn
Lewis and Michael Buerk, who consider themselves "gentlemen", to behave in
an almost voyeuristic way by "peeking" into the living room of one of
their viewers. A year ago I wrote to the BBC asking if these newscasters
would confirm or deny the accusations made against them. The BBC replied
that their newscasters had denied the accusations, but refused to do so in
writing.

It is well known that MI5 have the ability to plant stories in certain
newspapers, but convincing television newscasters to "watch" a viewer
while they read the news would surely be very difficult for them to
accomplish, unless they presented themselves to these journalists as
being, for example, a group in the media who were seeing to it that I got
my "deserved" treatment. MI5 has a history of manipulating the media, so
it might not be too difficult for them to accomplish such a trick, whereas
a private group would not have this ability.

"Have they ever denied that they are the Security Service?"

No. Never. This is in fact the main reason why I believe "they" are MI5
and not a privately funded group. If my guess had been wrong then I am
sure that "they" would have crowed over my mistake, but they have never
admitted nor denied that they are employees of MI5.

In early January 1996 I flew on a British Airways jet from London to
Montreal; also present on the plane, about three or four rows behind me,
were two young men, one of them fat and voluble, the other silent. It was
quite clear that these two had been planted on the aircraft to "wind me
up". The fat youth described the town in Poland where I had spent
Christmas, and made some unpleasant personal slurs against me. Most
interestingly, he said the words, "he doesnt know who we are".

Now I find this particular form of words very interesting, because while
it is not a clear admission, it is only a half-hearted attempt at denial
of my guess that "they" = "MI5". Had my guess been wrong, the fat youth
would surely have said so more clearly.

"If MI5 were behind it, why would they wish to mask their involvement?"

I have heard a number of times a belief from people in the media that it
is they, the media people, who are behind the abuse. In spring 1994 Chris
Tarrant the Capital Radio D.J. said sarcastically on his breakfast show,
"You know this bloke? he says were trying to kill him. We should be done
for attempted manslaughter". We, we, we. Tarrant thought it was a media
conspiracy.

Returning to the question of "interactive watching" by television
newscasters, it would again be much easier for them to take part in that
sort of activity if they convinced themselves that the surveillance and
abuse were organised by "their own", by media people. It must be second
nature to MI5 to mask their involvement in the matters they deal with; in
this case, they pretend the campaign is organised by a group in the media,
and any journalists who suspect otherwise keep their silence.

Conclusion

Over the last three years I have stated with some force my belief that MI5
are responsible for my misfortunes. I have done so on Internet newsgroups,
in letters and faxes to people in politics and the media in the UK, and in
1997 I made a formal complaint to MI5 regarding their activities; the
Security Service Tribunal replied in June 1997 that "no determination in
your favour has been made on your complaint". (I believe the statement by
the Security Service Tribunal can be disregarded, as they have never, ever
made a ruling in favour of a complainant.) In three years of naming MI5 as
my oppressor "they" have never denied the charge. To me, their silence on
this point indicates that my guess was accurate. I believe my persecutors
stand identified. The question of why they should carry out this campaign
is one I will try to answer in a future article.

The Truth About MI5 Persecution J W 19:34:27
I am a staff member of a mental institution near Dallas, Texas. One of
our patients has been posting numerous messages using the above
subject. This is not uncommon and we permit it as it allows our patients
to interact with the outside world on a controlled basis. We monitor
their activities while they are in our facility to ensure they are not
a threat to themselves or others.

This person has been evaluated as being level 5 mentally incompetent.
This is the point where fantasy becomes reality for the individual. Rest
assured this individual is not violent, but actually quite compliant and
submissive.

On a daily basis we do try to present reality to them to slow the rate
of regression, but sadly some seem to interpret it as a form of
persecution and withdraw even more into their fantasy world.

We find it interesting that this individual would use the title MI5
Persecution in their postings as it implies that they still have a grasp
of reality to some degree.

Be thankful for the health you have.

understanding that wipers switch is the same part with the motor. Is
wipers motor located under the dashboard? What's the best way to
access the motor?
Thanks.

Pop open the hood. There's a long plastic piece that comes out. After
that it's not too bad. The switch is built into the motor assembly.
Your best bet may be to find a complete setup (including linkage) at a
junkyard, that's what I did.

Re: Problem with air recycle button Oppie 06:02:45
I'm sure that this varies with model and year. Could you please provide
this?

I just noticed that when I engage the air recycle button I can hear or
feel no difference in the air flow. If this is working properly of
course your can hear and feel an increase in the air flow. The
indicator light does go on but that's it aside from a low but audible
beep when the button is depressed.
Has anyone had any experience with this problem? Is this an easy fix
by switching out some switch or relay? If so, where would the switch
be located that controls the recycling function?
Thanks for any help.

Re: What's the view on the VUE? Marx404 00:31:33
Glad to hear that your SC2 is doing so well under such conditions. I have a
2002 SC2 w/ 55K mi. This is what I kow about the VUE, as I used to sell
them and know many ppl who had them.

Stay clear of any automatic tranny 4cyl prior to 2005 which is CVT tranny.
This belt driven tranny had many issues and was discontinued by Saturn in
favor of a more traditional 4 gear auto tranny. Man. 4cyl in just about any
year is ok, but after 2004 was more refined.

Favor V6 models after 2004 which is when the Honda engine was introduced. I
personally like the old V6 which was from the Caddy Catera, but the newer
Honda VTEC engine runs faster, cleaner and quieter and has the highest hp
(250hp) vs gas mileage, 28mpg.

My best bet would be a 2005 as this is when Saturn made over 800 model
changes tot he VUE as well as overhauling the V6. Special package models can
be worth your while, like the Sun & Sound pkg (SR & adv. audio combined) or
the Redline version are quite favorable and will hold thier value better.

dead key fob '01 lw300 Oppie 21:33:13
A couple of days ago the keyless entry stopped working on my key fob. My
wife's worked so at least, it was not a problem with the BCM (that receives
the signal).

Battery in the fob was replaced only about 6 months back so that was not a
likely cause. It measured 3V with a meter and 2.95V with a 1000 ohm load.
Sounds good.

I was in the office and had access to a spectrum analyzer (a fancy radio
receiver that is used for finding signal strength over a wide range of
frequencies). I set the region of intrest to about 330mhz and pressed the
button on the fob. No signal. Opened the fob case and cleaned the contacts
on the board just under the buttons. They had gotten fouled. Cleaning was
done with a flux remover. For good measure, I also removed the battery and
cleaned its contacts on the battery and board. Put it back together and
pressed the button. Success - saw a blip on the analyzer. Went outside and
tried it on the car. Worked without resetting which surprised me a bit.
Normally you hold the lock and unlock buttons down for seven seconds while
near the car to reset the fob.

The reset information was molded into the inside back cover of the fob. I
seem to remember a slightly different method from the owner's manual. Got to
check that later. Meanwhile I'm a happy camper.
