I have a 1999 Saturn SL2 (manual transmission) and neither of my reverse lights are working. I've changed the bulbs, but that did not solve the problem. I've read a couple of old posts that describe a switch that is located on the transmission case, but the associated links to photos that had been posted long ago no longer work. Would anyone happen to have such photos that they could post so that I can see what I may be looking for and/or provide some insight into replacing the switch by myself? TIA SaturnFans.com perhaps?

| Re: LIRR Oppie 00:36:44 |
| | One problem is to determine whether the transmission bucking is due to engine being in limp home mode (which makes for rough and abrupt shifts at a higher than normal shift point) or something actually with the transmission or powertrain control module/senosrs/valves. Any service organization worth their salt should be able to repeat your drive cycle with a scanner attached to record data that preceedes any code.
Aside from that - Happy New Year <Hic> Oppie

In an attempt to get this back on track and i dont mean railroad tracks: Other day my friend and his wife were in the car. They have the same 2000 LS as me, they liked mine and bought one. They have had problems with the service light and transmission for some time. The symptoms are a little different. It doesnt happen as regularly as mine and it usually happens when the weather changes. Repeated visits to Saturn service did not help. She even waited until the light came on and then drove it to Saturn and even then they could not figure it out. I had thought of doing that but now i guess i wont. With me it's car runs fine until service light comes on, then the transmission starts to buck (for lack of a better word). This only happens after the car has run at highyway speed for at least a half hour and the hits the side streets. That's when light comes on and the tranny gets rough. With my car this doesnt happen every time but close to it. Car is still driveable, obviously. Just hesitant. THanks.

| '01 LW300 HVAC panel replace Oppie 05:48:15 |
| | '01 LW300 HVAC panel replace
I replaced the entire HVAC control panel last year. The blower selector switch was fried and I couldn't find the switch alone - only came as part of the entire panel - at $170...
Oh well, that's water under the dam. Now I notice that the A/C compressor comes on (a/c request) one click CCW of floor heat (on the right side selector knob). The old panel had the compressor kick in one click CCW of Defrost+Floor heat.
The vent selector 'switch' is really only a potentiometer- the wiper of which supplies a control voltage to a servo motor that controls the air routing. That part is working properly. The control voltage also drives some digital control -also within the hvac panel - that generates the a/c request signal that feeds the BCM. The threshold of where this signal comes in is in question.
I looked in the service manual to see if there was some calibration for this but could not find anything. Anybody have any feedback on this problem?? I can always try to re-assemble the old panel and swap it out into the new module - just messy.
Thanks - Oppie

| Coolant Flush - GM Engine Coolant Supplement ?? ;-} 09:35:19 |
| | 97 SW1 177,000 miles, 284,853 kilometers.
This car was due for a coolant flush. According to the owners manual, DEX- COOL radiator fluid only needs to be serviced once every 5 years or 100,000 miles. The last coolant flush service was done by Saturn 5 or 6 years ago. This time I went to an independent shop, but I brought my Owners Manual along. While I was in the shop waiting room, I read in the Owners Manual on page 283, "Use GM Engine Coolant Supplement (sealer) (GM Part No. 3634621 with any complete coolant change".
I never heard of this before. The independent shop guys never heard of it either. I had the coolant flush performed at the independent shop. I got home and checked the Chilton Manual and the Chilton Manual doesn't make any reference to special "Engine Coolant Supplement (sealer)" in the coolant flush procedure.
The Saturn dealer wanted USD $135.00 + to perform the coolant flush procedure. The independent shop wanted a little over half of the amount Saturn wanted for the same procedure. Do y'all think the "GM Engine Coolant Supplement (sealer)" is really worth the extra $50 to $60.
Thanks for the help, SW1

| wheel nut threads Hubops 04:20:24 |
| | When I switched-over to my winter tires, a few weeks ago, I had almost every lug nut thread off "stiff" ... not exactly stripped threads - but not finger-loose (like I'm used-to) Someone at work said the threads can be "stretched" from over-tightening ... others are saying never use any lube on them.. I have always used a small amount (just a few drops) of oil on the studs, any time I have a wheel off. I realize that I probably should be using a torque wrench for tightening ... just never had a problem in the past (30 + years of driving) Any ideas or suggestions ? Torque specs ? ( just normal steel rims ) 2002 SL1 100,000 km. I've had the car for just over a year. Thanks ; John T.

| Re: Saturn SL2 Died away from Home/ Please comment Lane 16:24:45 |
| | Have the battery and alternator tested. I know some automotive stores do this for no charge. Very weird things can happen if the electrical system is having problems.
It's good to hear you didn't get rid of the car. It is always cheaper to fix what you own rather than buy something else (assuming what you buy is in a better condition). I'll never understand how some people justify getting rid of a car over a "too expensive" repair when the alternative is spending 20x - 100x as much on a new car.

Yesterday I drove from Upstate NY to Long Island My destination was made and then car died. Each time I started the car it would die when I drove a few feet. (More later about this) I called towing service $650 plus tolls to get my car home, forget this. I called vehicle donation program to take car away. No way must have title. I said I do not carry it in my car. Oh no what should I do. Thank GOD I was very close to ADVANCE AUTO. I spent 8 hours fixing transmission line leak. Lost 3 quarts of oil. Real leak was oil transmission oil filter, Finally no leaks but: When I drive the car it would die when I would hit the brake pedal. So I drove and would use hand brake to go down the street. So I drove to a service station that night and asked if they can take a look. I said perhaps can not be fixed tonight so Mechanic said he will disable Brake pedal switch. Okay we talked for a few min I said do not bother we can pull fuse. He was great only 10 dollars for one hour. Long Island is great I was on my way. Another couple of problems. Signal light and flasher would also make engine spit sputter and almost die. So I avoided using them. At last I made it home Today a new day clean all oil off of front of transmission area. Open up wiring harness. No oil in harness. Clean all wires to transmission and oh boy no more problem. Not exactly sure why car is running with no problems. I put the fuse back for the brake lights and still no problem. Anybody have a clue what happened ? All day today car is running fine. Should I trust this car again?

| Saturn Windshield Wiper Problem.. help? Guest 01:06:35 |
| | Okay I own a 1999 Saturn SL2. It has 110k miles on it and has done its job. But I have one little problem, the windshield wipers are acting up now and do not want to turn off after you turn them on. They have a mind of their own. One minute you turn it on and it turns right off. Other times you turn them on, and they will not turn off and it seems like that always happens on sunny days. So IM driving down the road with wipers goign full blast on a sunny day. Any suggestions as to the problem and what I need to do to fix it? |

| Is This Problem The Ignition? Ed 20:18:05 |
| | I have a '97 Saturn. It runs great but recently when I try to start the car it takes a number of tries of turning key, taking key out and trying again etc. It seems to be getting gradually worse over the last month. Should I replace the ignition or is it a loose wire? How much would it cost to have a mechanic replace it?
Thank-you

I have a 92 Saturn SL2, 5 speed manual. I put in a new clutch (purchased at Advanced Auto Parts) in March of this year. It's been fine until suddenly Thursday night... - At the last stop sign before home, it was difficult to get back into first gear - As the clutch came out, there was a bad vibration and the RPM count seemed atypically high - It did go and made the last two blocks. The smell was a burning smell, but not so much oil. It reminds me more of burning aluminum (like in an electrical fire) - The transmission case fluid was at the add pint line, so we added a pint. - I coaxed it into first and even 2nd and reverse. - I looked at it on blocks - no sign of any extra fluid loss - There is vibration in the clutch pedal even in neutral - After a little RPM runups, the vibration is largely gone, but the clutch is slipping badly; I can let the clutch out with the break on and it doesn't kill the engine - One other piece of background: I slopily let the engine oil get down to 1 QT below the add point (i.e., I put 2 quarts in). The engine seems to be running fine now, however. Question: What might have caused the short term bad vibration? Is it plausible that I just got a bad clutch? What might I have done wrong when I put the clutch in to cause it to go south in 8 months? Thanks for any thoughts! Thomas. Sounds like the clutch disc came apart. What might you have done wrong to cause it to fail so soon? You bought a cheap clutch made in China. Doesn't matter if it has a lifetime warranty. Are you going to risk replacing it with the same piece of crap? I hope not. Replace everything you bought at Advanced Auto Parts with dealer or KNOWN GOOD aftermarket parts like ACT.

| SL2 makes terrible noise Doug 08:57:38 |
| | Daughter's 2001 SL2 has a serious problem -- engine runs but makes terrible & loud banging noise. A mechanic listened briefly and said it sounds like she threw a rod. Took the valve cover off & everything looks good & clean, plenty of oil. Just 90,000 miles on the car.
She went to the dealership (w/o the car) and a salesperson told her that with Saturns there could be another cause for this that a mechanic not experienced with Saturns might not think of...but she didn't catch what it was he said, other than it might not be as serious as needing a rebuilt engine. Any idea what he might have been talking about?

Yes ,all great points, everyear I contemplate to buy those rubber inclosed blades, the kind that keep ice off the blade from forming,I do wipe them of w/a paper towel, but never used alcohol, bring on that those are winter blades and I leave them on all year. They definetly ork in the snow.. they on't get all blocked up. I use only avvco blades and am very happy. The top notch ones I got at advance auto parts (cost more) I took off in 2 weeks and tossed them. They were too stiff an noisy. Thye were the ones with he multi blades tri something.. just a gimmick Phil Yea, a gimmick that can ruin your windshield! | so long and thanks for all the fish David Teichholtz 15:00:23 |
| | Good day. I have been on this forum since 2002 when I bought my 1995 SW1. There has been a wealth of information in this forum and I hope that I have contributed some knowledge also.
In September a family member had an accident and pretty much totaled the car, but thankfully nobody was injured. It had 220,000 miles on it and would have almost certainly made it to 300,000 if not more. I paid $2000 for it 5 years ago and it certainly served us well. It was an extremely reliable car.
I also had a 1997 SL1 for about a year which had also been in an accident, although I was able to put a couple of doors on it and drive it for a while longer. That car was traded in earlier this year for a new Civic Hybrid.
As I already had too many cars, I won't be replacing the Saturn.

My grandparents recently bought me a 1997 SL1 with my money without consulting me first. I am having a couple issues that I'm not sure where to start. 1. Last week, I blew a tire. While changing the tire I found that the brake drum easily slides off without making any adjustments. I know that it means it's so far out of adjustment that I cannot solve the problem by applying the brakes while going in reverse, but don't know how to adjust them otherwise. 2. I changed the oil maybe a week after they bought it. It was very very black. Since then, I have had to add nearly a gallon of oil. What has me stumped is that I don't see any oil spots where I park, there is no oil being sprayed out under the hood, no sign of it in the coolant and it doesn't seem to be burning it either. Any ideas? Well as for item #2, if you don't see it on the ground then it's going out the tailpipe, which is not good news. Item #1 sounds like you need a brake job done on the rears.
