| Re: Traction on LW200 Oppie 23:40:24 |
| | Does your car have the traction control? Not sure if that was standard or option on the lw200. I have an '01 lw300 so I don't know how similar the two models are but here's what I find...
Last year I was on a hill on ice and was not getting the traction control to work as I expected. Did find that it took a second or two of continuous wheel slip before the traction control seemed to engage. When the traction control is in control, you should get a 'Low Traction' indication on your instrument cluster.
The way it works is by a speed sensor on each of the four wheels (all four sensors are used for Braking/ABS control and the front two only are used for traction control). When the traction control senses front wheel slip (loss of traction), it applies a bit of brake on the slipping wheel in an attempt to divert torque to the wheel that is not slipping. This is akin to the 'limited slip differential' of years ago. If the wheels are still slipping, the throttle is automatically cut back (easy to do with drive by wire as my engine has). Normal throttle control is returned when the wheel slip condition has been corrected or when you ease up on the pedal. The owner's manual has some information on this and when/when not to use the traction control.
Hope that helped Bob O.

Hi, I have a 2001 Saturn LW200. When I was jammed in the snow, I realised that only one wheel (the right one) seem to give some traction. Is it normal ? Thank you ! Stephane B.

| 1998 sl2 woes Cj 08:29:45 |
| | 1998 sl2 stalls when i come to a stop, but drives fine down the road. once stalled it restarts okay in park or neutral but as soon as i put it in drive the car shakes violently and stalls. i have to rev up the motor and slam it into drive to get it to go, but it seems to be bogging out until i get up to speed. my check engine light is on and the auto zone guy said that the error codes indicate a faulty camshaft sensor and faulty tranny temp sensor. also, when i start the car in the morning the temp gauge on the dash indicates a hot engine temp even if the car is cold...any help/advice would be appreciated, this is my only way to work
p.s. if i have to replace the camshaft sensor or tranny temp sensor is it a major pain in the butt?
many thanks, cj

I checked the fuse box and jumped the battery, but no response. At this point the car not even trying to turn over, seems to be electrical or car ignition issue. Have any other suggestions, please post them here.

| Re: shifter problem Marx404 16:16:05 |
| | I'm not 100% on this one ernie, but it kinda sounds like the retaining clip for the shifter cable. The shifter cables are notorious for breaking at this point and must be replaced. This can be for one or more reasons including hard shifting or just old age. The cable is designed to break rather than the linkage as a safeguard but as said above can break from old age too.

Daughter's 1996 saturn sc. 150000 miles 5 speed. The shifter was off I worked the shifter for a while and got it to go into reverce and then into low. This is about the fourth time for this problem. There is a clip where the shift cable goes into the tranmission and it keeps losing the clip. Is there something more that holds this thing togather that we are missing? Thanks Ernie

| Re: Ion Front Alignment Oppie 16:22:06 |
| | I severely mistrust wheel alignments. Just because they slap a gauge on the wheels and make an adjustment dosn't mean it is right. did you only have a 2 wheel alignment or a 4 wheel done? The 4 wheel is definitely recomended, especially for independant rear wheel suspensions.
There could be a suspension problem that won't show when the car is just sitting there. Best to jack up the car (both fronts or both rears off the ground), remove the wheels and take a pry bar between the hub and frame. Stress it in all directions and look for any play between bushings, joints and frame. I did this with my '01 lw300 and found that the rear trailing arm bushings to frame were very soggy.

| sync keyless entry remote Matthew Fries 16:12:55 |
| | I have a 97 SC2 with electronic locks. The remote for keyless entry will no longer sync when I hold both lock and unlock buttons for 7 seconds.
I *DID* have a problem with the battery in the remote leaking, so I cleaned the inside of the remote, and replaced the battery. The Lock button works on its own. The unlock button works on its own. Even the trunk and panic buttons work independently on their own, but when I hold both lock and unlock, the car horn will no longer sound for 4 times.
I thought it was my remote that was bad. Luckily, I was given 2 remotes when I purchased the vehicle, and the second remote had been unused for 10 years (with no battery in it). I put a battery in the other remote, and that one won't sync either.
Everything else on the car is working OK. I can't imagine anything that could cause this behavior. Anyone have a clue?
Thanks.

As expected, it starts up at random interval, so I haven't been by the dealer to take it in when it's doing it. Did you ever hear a "squeal" type sound before you changed the bearings?
Thanks, Steve

Finally changed both front hub assemblies in my '06 Vue...I had mentioned in a previous post a while back that I was having a snow tire sound in the front, and thought my it was my tires, as I have 53K on the car with the original tires and brakes. I thought that it was the ties being near end of life that was making the noise when somebody told me that it was probably the bearings. They were right! New bearings and the car rides like new again. I can't believe I had to change the bearings before the tires or brakes. What the hell is up with that?!?! Lot of corrosion on the drivers side. You could feel the assy was gritty. I figured that as mine is a 4 cyl 5-speed, it has less weight than the V6 AWD, mine would last longer...*sigh* - guess not..... Anyway - Getting both bearings done at dealer = $800+ Getting both bearings done at private garage = ~$600 Bought Timken bearings online @ $111 each + $15 shipping and handling. Changed both in 1-1/2 hours with help of brother in law = $350 total parts and dinner [Took him and our wives out to dinner to say thanks ] Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! IYM

I'm not looking to part the car out, once I sell it, it goes out of the driveway in one piece. The glass, door panels, tranny are all in good shape too. Overall miles on the car are about 180,000. Same value as a junk yard engine. Check around and see what they are selling for in your area.

| Re: 1996 SL2 Won't Start Bob Shuman 05:14:57 |
| | Have you attempted to turn the engine by hand using a socket or wrench on the harmonic balancer pulley? If it does not turn then it may have internal damage preventing rotation (Be careful when you do this and take precautions to make sure the engine will not start.)
Was the starter solenoid replaced? Are you sure the solenoid is good? (The replacement may be defective.) Is the "click" you are hearing the solenoid engaging? If so, then the ignition switch and starter relay are good, so look for issues in the high current path.
Are you certain that the full battery current is getting tot the starter? Are both of the cables (positive and negative/ground too) tight clean and not internally corroded/damaged? Are connections at both ends (grounds to the engine block for instance) clean and tight?
Good luck.

Okay, I'll start by saying I've dug through the internet looking to solve this problem and haven't found an answer yet so I came here. I have a 96 SL2 that won't turn over. I've replaced the battery, alternator, and JUST finished replacing the starter. The symptom is the same as with the old starter, it will click, lights dim, and it doesn't turn the engine over. I'm lost as to what it would be.

What would the average cost be of installing a new starter be on a '97 sl2? I assume that generally they are replaced with rebuilt starters. Thank-you Will you do it yourself or have it done? My advice is don't try to save money as it will only cost you more. Here's what I mean:
Cheap "rebuilt" starter from China with a lifetime warranty. $ Good Saturn starter from a junk yard <75K miles, 30 day warranty: $ Truly rebuilt starter with a 12 month warranty. $$-$$$ New starter with a 12 month warranty. $$$$
Likelihood that cheap starter from China will fail within the first 3 months: 90% Likelihood junk yard starter will fail within the first 3 months: 1% Likelihood that new/rebuilt starter will fail within the first 3 months: <1%
Service life of cheap starter from China: 2 years Service life of junk yard starter: ~5 years Service life of new/rebuilt starter: 7-10 years
Same applies for alternators.
IMO the lifetime warranty on the cheap Chinese part is worthless because when it fails you are likely (I hope) to replace it with a different (better) unit.
A junk yard starter is not a bad choice if you car has a lot of miles on it. The starter should be good for ~150K miles. My Dodge Stratus 2.5L V6 has 140K miles on the original starter. Look for one off an engine that had < 75K miles.
Another option is to have your starter rebuilt. This is my preference, but then I'm an old fart that was once a certified mechanic. It will probably cost more than a junk yard starter but it should last as long as the original. Some shops will also remove and reinstall it. Typically the solenoid, brushes and bushings are all that need to be replaced. The armature and pinion gear should be good to 300K miles.

RE: 2008 Saturn Vue XE 4 cylinder vs 2008 Pontiac Torrent I've narrowed my search for a small SUV to these two cars.
Personally I dont like the New Vues. Foreign made (german engine, mexican chassis IIRC) and the new 2.4L gets worse gas mileage than the 2.2L. The 2.4L also up'ed the octane requirements... (I'm not saying timing chain driven Ecotecs arent good engines.) Just be sure to factor 'octane' into the mileage difference of what ever you get.
You never said which engine you were looking at in the Torrent but I'm guessing its the 3.4 by the city mileage. The Torrent is based on the same chassis as the Equinox. The 3.4L is no longer made in America and is made only in China now. The Equinox&Torrent is also made in China. The 3.4L engine was an awful design so stay away from it. The optional 3.6 VVT engine is very advance (aka complex) and still to new to judge but I don't really care for it...
I'm not fan of the CR-V either... There are no SUV's I like anymore since the Vue changed... Maybe you could consider a Crew Cab Colorado but I doubt it that. The 2.9L actually does pretty good in it. I could name a few nice cars but I don't think they'll fit your need. If I HAD to have a 'new' SUV it would be the Vue but I'd rather have the older 2.2L ones.
Main reasons, forward folding passenger seat, reclining rear seats and lots of rear leg room. I need these features as I sometimes need to work on my laptop from the car and like to sit in the back. Both FWD, Both Leather interior. Both black exterior. I was able to negotiate the Vue down to about 24k Out the door. And the Torrent for about 25k out the door. The Vue is 4 cylinders, but drives real nice for a 4 and will save some gas money. The Torrent is 6 cylinders, but engine seems loud and kind of low torque for a v6. The Vue does 19 city mpg, the Torrent 17mpg. (Slight win for Vue - though not a fair play) Leather on Torrent seams cheaper grade, comes in charcoal, Vues leather seems nicer, but in taupe. I prefer charcoal, but the taupe does look nice with black. As far of space in the back seat, the Torrent is incredible. roll the driver seat up and fold the passenger side and I feel like i'm in my living room. Incredible to think it's a small SUV. Exterior looks, both have their pros and are attractive. To me, much more attractive than the Honda CR-V. Also the CR-V does hot have a folding passenger seat (who cares right? well I do). Many small size suv's also still have the spare tire showing which is stupid. Sometimes the Torrent looks like a Minivan. Sometimes the Vue looks like a cheap Korean car. All that said, I would just buy the Torrent for the rear seating space and dark interior, my only concern is a online few reports I've read that might imply cheap plastic parts int he car might break and that over time, and in classic GM style, the engine might get weak and clunky. Any strong opinions about these cars or better alternatives? Any reason to simply not buy the Torrent? My most desired features in my next small SUV. |
