| Odometer gear replacement-94 SC2 Fred 02:45:23 |
| | Now that the weather is warming up I might take a stab at fixing the odometer in my 94 SC2. I have the 2 new gears that should get it going again. It was clicking on and off for a couple years and then stopped completely last June. Has anyone done this before?

| 99 SL1 Saturn Runs Rough Stephen Bausch 00:53:50 |
| | My wifes car is a 1999 Saturn SL1 with about 85k miles on it. Up until this last weekend it was running fine. I changed the oil on it and drove it a bit and it ran fine. The next day my wife reported some major problems with it. At idle it runs somewhat poorly. It seems to be missing every few seconds. When the car is put in gear, that's when it really starts to stumble and miss. The car really stumbles and hesitates when accelerating up to about 25 mph. If you floor it, at high RPMs, the power seems to be restored and it runs better, although not like what I am expecting. Of course the check engine light is one. And when accelerating from a stop, the check engine light may flash briefly. At any rate, I don't have a Autozone close to me so I can't check the engine codes. I have a date with the mechanic in a couple of days but would love to solve the problem before then. I change the oil again. Change the plugs. Changed the PCV valve. Checked the resistance on the plug wires. Checked the air filter, and I checked for any obvious wiring problems and vaccum leaks. I did not see any obvious problems. I have not check the compression or anything in the gas line. Any ideas?

| Stick-shift ION Marx404 19:44:03 |
| | Just curious anyone either give their kids or themselves driving a stick shift ION for the first time and how is it holding up transmission-wise?
I have had my '07 ION for 8 months now. I haven't really owned a manual drive car ever but have driven short distances in many. Driving one every day is quite the different story. It took me about a month to work out my bad shifting habits, but me and my ION are humming along just fine now. At 33mpg average, (vs 25 average in my automatic SC2) I can't complain about this powertrain.

| How similar are '96 and '99 Saturns? Doug Miller 08:19:44 |
| | I've had a '96 SL-2 for a couple of years, and bought a full set of factory service manuals for it almost immediately.
Just bought a '99 SL-2 earlier this week, which is obviously a very similar vehicle. My question is, *how* similar? Certainly the '96 manuals will be adequate for at least some repairs on the '99, but I don't have a feel for whether that portion might be 5%, or 95%, of the tasks.
Any guidance would be appreciated. TIA.

| Electronic digital odometer hard to read (99 SL2) Doug Miller 00:02:33 |
| | This is my second Saturn, but the first with an electronic digital odometer. I don't like that too much: it's difficult to read in the daytime, except in full sunlight, and impossible at night. Turning up the instrument panel lighting has no effect. Is this thing *supposed* to be this hard to read??

| turn signal & wiper switch on '99 SL2... Doug Miller 01:00:29 |
| | The entire assembly -- turn signal stalk, wiper stalk, emergency flasher button, ignition switch, shroud, and the metal bracket all that stuff mounts to -- is loose. It rotates about 1/4" counterclockwise when I press the stalk down to signal a left turn, and returns to the normal position when I release it. This is a 99 SL2 with a tilt steering wheel. Any ideas?
In a related issue, I tried to remove the shroud in an effort to see why this assembly is loose, but I can't get the lower half of the shroud off because I can't get the lock cylinder out of the ignition switch. According to the manuals I have, there's supposedly a square release button on the top of the ignition switch... nope. Not that I can find.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

| Re: Astra 5 door xr Marx404 04:07:44 |
| | actually thanks to Opel 3rd party mfg's., there is a new armrest for the center console which has a sliding cup holder that both gives the driver an armrest and a sliding cup holder which moves the cup holder further towards the dash. I think the manufacturer's name is Boomerang, they are an official GM OEM aftermarket mfg.
For the people in the back there are two cup holders that slide out from the bottom of the rear seat already built in to the car. There not tin the best place, but they are there. Europeans don't drink and drive. -- marx404

| Rug and matting falling apart! Marx404 16:11:04 |
| | My '07 ION.3 is only 7 mo. old and already the rubber matting under where my left foot sits (just above where the rug ends under the dash) has a hole in it from where my foot rests.
The rug under where the clutch is also showing signs of wear and is thinning out. I do have mats but this is occurring in the area just above the mats on the rubber sound padding where my left foot rests when I am not clutching. I've never see a new car wear like this!
I was wondering if there is anything that I can put down to reduce wear and tear, like an adhesive plastic or rubber sheet?
Thanks for any good ideas. I am under warranty, but my service dept. doesn't seem to care about this and is calling this "normal wear and tear". (sigh) -- marx404

It's a four door station wagon 1.9 liter I4 SFI engine, SW2. Engine service soon light comes on every month, or so. Local Garage unhooks the battery, reseting the code, & tells me my gas cap was loose. It stays off for another month, then comes on again. Also, right after Check codes again.
starting to drive the car, a few minutes later, the two red coolant temp, & coolant level lights flash together (same bulb??), No.
but the car runs fine. Then, they go off, & MAY come on again. Is it a faulty Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor? Dani Shrug...Maybe its faulty but then why is your coolant level light also going off... No mention of coolant level or coolant upkeep history.

| Freezing window washer Coasten1 14:41:00 |
| | Hello I have a 2007 Vue AWD. It seems that whenever the temperature drops around 20 degrees, my washer fluid does not spray on either front or back windows. I know the fluid is not frozen. (at least in the tank) My mom has a 2007 Ion and it did the same thing. They replaced the fluid pump in the Ion. My mom really hasn't been driving in the cold for us to know if it fixed the problem.
Has anyone else had this issue?
Thanks

| 2001 LW200 Manual, No A/C Steph 10:35:28 |
| | We wouldn't want to violate the speed of light or murphy's law. Our 2001 LW200 with a 5-speed manual tranny ran out of extended coverage last June and now is showing signs of semi-annual irritations.
Some might recall me posting in August/September of it acting as if it were a flooded carbeurated engine. Well no matter that has only reoccurred once or twice, and I am 85% sure it is due to DW's driving.
However, for years I complained to Saturn Service about the unsually loud "clunk" after initial engine starting. This was explained to me as a normal toggling of the A/C compressor to keep the parts lubricated. Whatever.
But Saturday DW calls and says the A/C quit. When I checked the car I found that toggling the AC button, or switching to defrost did not suddenly load up the engine, raise the RPMs, or give off an audible clunk as the compressor engaged.
Are there diagnostics I can run by toggling button combinations? Will anything show up with a scan reader? I was hoping maybe it is a fuse or solenoid - but where I have no idea. Woudl I be better tacking it Saturn, or an A/C shop?

The owner's manual will give you specifics.

| re: Mysterious Cruise Control Marx404 16:30:49 |
| | Just a follow up to my orig. post. Yesterday they finally (been waiting since my O.P. date of 02/03 for part, then the labor) changed out the upper clutch pedal switch in my ION and the cruise control. Seems to have fixed not only that problem, but the hard jerk I was experiencing when the CC button set was pressed. They also took out some of the play from the clutch pedal and it shifts much smoother now.
Wish I had my own personal mechanic, these guys suck and are not your typical Saturn techs. At least "that's" over with and hopefully fixed. I cringe at the thought of having to bring my car in again,a friggen oil change may take them a week.

| Auto rear view mirror dimmer Coasten1 16:20:16 |
| | I have to ask. How many people turn off the auto dimmer when they drive at night? I think it is bad that you can't toggle the option to leave it on or off.
When it is dark behind me and a car comes up, I like to see who is in the car and where the car is. Not just the headlights. If they have the brights on behind me, that is another issue.
In my old 2003 VUE, I could just press the button for a second and it would shut off. In the 2007 VUE I have to hold it down for 10 seconds to turn it off. Annoying.

| mysterious cruise control Marx404 05:42:41 |
| | I have already had the cruise control switch replaced a few months ago on my '07 ION.3 (manual). It is acting up again and works when the heck it feels like it. I have tried to notice a pattern, but it seems to have a mind of it's own. Sometimes it works, then sometimes it won't. Mostly, it will work for a few miles, then if I hit the brake or disable it, when I go to reenable it, it wont work at all again.
I think I have a faulty steering wheel button switch again, or could it be something else? Is there a way to diagnose this? TIA. -- marx404

Was planning to start up a similar group when I found this ancient history and figured now was as good a time as any to reactivate it. My personal top five: 2004 WRX wagon: what you get when you crossbreed a Porsche 911 and a Jeep Cherokee. Does absolutely everything well. Runs fast and handles well, AWD and LSD keep it on th road in any weather, can carry a load of cargo, ergonomics and comfort may not be sublime, but the seats are perfect. 1965 Corvair Monza Coupe: I gutted and rebuilt this one for time trials and autocrossing with a complete race suspension, hotter carbs, good tires and an interior I built from scratch. Used it as a daily driver and road tripper as well. Like the Subie, it had an LSD and despite a lowered ride height was unstoppable in snow. 1973 Z-28 Camaro: A car I craved in high school and eventually bought one after college. Like any pony car of its time, was crude compared to a 21st century high-performance machine. Unlike most though, it could corner as well as accelerate. Wasn't the monster the 1970-71 LT-1 versions were, since it was a low compression smoggified L-82, but still hauled. Sold it but got it back two years later. Only car I ever owned twice. 1993 Nissan Sentra SE-R: One of the best cheap performance cars ever made. High revving engine, limited slip differential with equal length half-shafts, handled well. A perfect package for the 12 grand it cost at the time. 2003 Infiniti G35: The Skyline was another car I dreamed of, and guessed right on the G35 and grabbed it as soon as it hit the US. Dealer was willing to let it go cheap since the market hadn't been established. Within two months you couldn't touch one for the sticker price. Terrific combination of performance and luxury at a BMW beater price.
