| 95 Saturn SL1 problem w/ fan, thermostat, and Back-up light Roger E 03:30:38 |
| | Car: 1995 Saturn SL1 SOHC.
Symptom 1: Temperature gauge reads temperature but engine is running cool. Temp Gauge below typical running temperature. About 2 minutes after car starts running the radiator fan starts and runs non stop for about 30 minutes then soon restarts or until ignition is off. Season is summer; environmental temp is about 27 deg Celsius. Typical drive is 60 minutes duration. Engine is not overheating. No leaks in coolant system/hoses, reservoir level is good. Coolant mix is ethylene-glycol coolant with distilled water in a 70:30 ratio.
My thoughts: From reading my Haynes manual, it appears the thermostat is stuck open. Ok I can fix that.... but what puzzles me is why the fan is running on?
I will investigate the 1. Wiring harness, 2. the PCM/CCC/computer trouble codes (looks like I can do this on a 1995 model), and 3. engine coolant temp sensor.
Everything else seems fine..... I hope it’s not the PCM.
Symptom 2: Both reverse/back-up lights do not turn on when in reverse gear. Bulbs test fine. There is circuit continuity between Back-up Light fuse (at front engine fuse box) and lamps.
My thoughts: From reading my Haynes manual.... I located the Back-up Light Switch on top of the manual transaxle. The Back-up Light fuse is good. With ignition key OFF, I unplugged the 2-wire connector from the switch, closed (short) the circuit on both terminals of the connector.... turned ON ignition key.... still no light, also ran engine.... still no light. I get no or a very small mV reading on both connector terminals (I am unhappy with getting a good ground connection though for my meter.... any suggestions with a good ground connection?). Wires and Wire-harness look in good shape. From the circuit diagram I should be reading Voltage on the battery side of the switch connector, then also on the ground side of the switch when in reverse if the switch is good. Right now it seems that I cannot conclude that the switch is bad.
Thanks very much for your assistance, much appreciated. Cheers, Roger

| Now we've got an Aura Usenet User 01:07:46 |
| | Several months ago I went looking for a new car for my daughter. She looked at the Aura and the Vue and went with the Vue. However, I really like the Aura and so did she. She wants to sit higher up so she went with the Vue. With the zero financing, the Aura was too attractive so I went shopping this weekend, bought the Aura yesterday and picked it up this afternoon. What a great car. We settled on the 4 cyc engine. Kept cost down, has great performance and nice gas mileage. ** Posted from http://www.teranews.com **

My 2001 Saturn L300 is having a serious power loss. The dealer says its a clogged cat and will cost about $1500 in parts alone. Cats on line are around a hundred bucks, but are not approved for CA. At this point I dont even care about passing smog, I just want to squeeze another year out of this car. Any ideas or cheaper options available? Thanks....

The hood release spring on my '01 SC2 has vanished. It's the big one in the latch mechanism that causes the hood to pop when you pull the release. Where can I get the specs on that spring to replace it?

| | You and everybody else... I'm with Verizon which is dropping everything that is not in the www.bit-8.org list : <snip from web page> Newsgroups whose names begin with one of these components: comp, humanities, misc, news, rec, sci, soc, talk. The collective namespace defined by these eight lists of newsgroups is what we mean by "the Big-8". <end snip>
I see you have a solution already - posting through a third party server - Teranews.com (as do I). This seems to be the path of least resistance as the big ISPs are trying to sanitize their offerings and limit their legal exposure.

My guess is that it is a muffler back dual but I sure would like details. Yea it's dumb but I like the look of duals coming out the rear.

| Re: What is happening to this NG? Hang_Traitor_Democrats 08:41:34 |
| | I think many people have moved to discussion groups on Yahoo and the like. The reason is you can moderate the groups and keep out the trolls. With newsgroups you cannot. I have not been to the Saturn group in quite awhile since we did not have any issues with the SL1 and did not stop by much until the daughter wanted to take a look at buying the Vue.
Or maybe people are just moving on to other makes of vehicles.
The other thing I noticed, is that most young people do not seem to know about Internet newsgroups, what they are, and how to access them. Schools really do a poor job of teaching computer technology.

| Re: LW-200 rear brakes / P-brake -Cronus- 17:18:44 |
| | First off there are no 'emergency brakes' to be found on any Saturn. The DOT does not require them on cars. (IOW no one should let their service brakes reach a point that they can fail.)
The L series had either rear disk with with a drum parking brake or simply drum brakes in the rear.
This is how you check adjustment, not make adjustments: ======================================== Park Brake Adjustment Check
On new vehicles (less than 50 miles) and on vehicles which have just had the rear brake serviced, before performing Park Brake Adjustment procedures, apply and release the brake pedal 20 times. This allows the adjuster to position the brake linings and prevents premature wear of the brake linings due to improper park brake adjustment. 1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist so the wheels spin freely. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information. 2. There should be no drag at the rear wheels with the park brake lever in the rest position. 3. Pull the park brake lever to the third click. There should be heavy brake drag to no rotation at both rear wheels when turned by hand.
Important
If both rear wheels do not exhibit similar drag in step 3, check for damaged or incorrectly installed rear disc or drum brake assembly installation of drum assembly components, park brake cables, and/or park brake lever assembly. The park brake is adjusted correctly if it meets the specifications explained in steps 2 and 3. 4. Adjust if necessary. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment . 5. Lower the vehicle from the hoist. ========================================

Vehicle Specs: 2000 Saturn SL2 with just over 14,000 miles Background: Since October my 'Service Engine Soon' light has been coming on with some degree of frequency. My service technicians say the problem is in the EVAP system. Initially I was told to turn my gas cap at least three clicks after pumping gas. When that didn't work, the gas cap was replaced. When that didn't work, some temperature related element (a thermostat if memory serves correctly) was replaced. I think there was one other replacement after that. Things seemed to be going better (as measured by almost a month without a 'Service Engine Soon' light coming on) until a month and a half ago when my transmission (rear & 2nd gear to be specific) blew and I had to have it replaced. This morning the 'Service Engine Soon' light popped on and sure enough, the technicians are telling me that it's the EVAP system again. At this point they say they have run every test known and consulted with Saturn engineers. They ultimately replaced one of the two solenoids, simply because the only parts of the EVAP system that haven't been replaced are the solenoids, so they're hoping this fixes it, and if it doesn't, then they'll simply fix the other solenoid. Question: Since I've never personally known someone with either EVAP problems or a blown transmission, and since most of the people I know are driving cars older than mine and those cars have had significantly less engine problems than mine, I can't help but wonder - is it possible that my transmission blew because of the mystery EVAP problem/s?

| LW-200 rear brakes / E-brake Steph 00:01:57 |
| | Any pointers on where to find the adjustment for the e-brake on a LW-200? I can't find any adjustment on the lever inside, so it must be under the car right? It doesn't have self-adjusting rear drums does it?
Should be easy enough to tighten up by lifting the rear wheels and sliding under if it is visible. I assume I would be looking for a y cable coming from each brake drum to the center of the car with the single cable going forward to the E-brake.

| | Cobbled up diode assembly I made in about 5 minutes with materials on hand works fine. The lamp actually runs brighter since the voltage was not being lost in a bad crimp in the original diode assembly. New diode also runs cool where the old one got so hot, it cracked the plastic case.
As written earlier, my homebrew part does not have the polarity key. Looking at the fuse panel, the polarity key is at the bottom of the diode socket. This would make the cathode (the side with the line on it) point to the left. Cathode ---I<I----- Anode
At closer inspection, the original diode has a number on it 12135037.
Googling for this comes up with Mouser selling them: Stock $3.29/ea $2.43 @ 25 pieces http://www.mouser.com/search/ProductDetail.aspx?qs=JdmRl75CwTo%2FG1AIRqTYnA%3D%3D
Looks like it is made by Delphi Connector systems although it appears to have a Littelfuse logo on it. http://connectors.delphi.com/DCSGDMCS/DCS/Catalog/PartDetail.aspx?PartNumber=12135037

This is completely nuts! I tried several auto parts stores and nobody had or even knew of the diode. One mechanic said to try Radio Shack (you know, the place where they say "you have questions, we have answers") and no dice there either. Finally gave up and made one from an old mini blade fuse. ripped out the fuse link and with a razor blade, cut off the top 1/16" of the plastic housing. This exposed the pins at top for soldering in a new 1N4005 (1 amp, 200 piv) diode. The new assembly does not have the polarity protection that the original had. I made sure to add the polarity (the diode symbol) to the fuse box cover so it does not get confused. Haven't tried it yet but would assume that if the diode is in reversed, opening a door will not turn on the rear cargo lamp (conversely, turning on the cargo lamp at the dome light will turn on the other interior lights).
