| Today was my lucky day! Psydocs@Gmail.Com 21:00:13 |
| | I started getting edgy the other day about the timing belt on my 85.5 944. Based on all the horror storys I have read about people parting out their baby's after snapping a belt and turning their engines into so much scrap, the change became a high priority. I read up on how to do it, but am not terribly mechanical and don't own very many tools. I broke down and took it to a Porsche dealer.
They replaced all 3 belts (timing, balance, accessory), changed the oil to Mobil One Synthetic 0w40 (never heard of the zero bit before but figured they know my car better than me so let them run that show), changed the clogged air filter, and inspected engine itself. All to the tune of 550$. All rollers checked out and did not need replacing. They also did not replace the valve cover gasket like I had asked them. Why? Because it wasn't the source of my slow leak. That was some other, much more minor gasket which I think he replaced as well. While in there, the mechanic looked the car over and complemented me on the incredibly good mechanical shape the vehicle is in. I couldn't be happier with this project.
Oh, and the lucky bit I mentioned? The old timing belt was chewed up badly. Cracks everywhere, a split or two, and several chuncks taken out of it. I was probably under 50 miles of driving from selling my car as a project on Ebay.
Whee!
Oh hey, a question for all: Did the 85.5 NA have a timing belt guide? I thought that the guides where from a later year (but pre-automatic tensioner). I ask because me engine has one and now I am wondering if it is the original engine or not.
Oh yeah, one more question: I was told when I bought the car that it had a LSD tranny out of a Turbo. Is a valid test lighting up the tires and seeing if I leave 1 strip or rubber or 2?

| 1990 C2 cuts out Guest 20:27:19 |
| | My 1990 C2 sometimes will just die when the car is stopped at a light or in traffic. I can always restart it but this is bothersome and embarrassing. I did change the fuel filter but it still happens. The air filter is also fine. Any idea? Thanks, Bob rjohn@vh.net

| HELP please - winker problem Myles Sutherland 19:48:26 |
| | Hi All,
Hoping someone can help me with a mystery problem that's arisen on my 1986 944 Lux.
I had to take the front bumper off recently, so obviously had to disconnect the two wires from each front winker assembly. Winkers were working correctly at the time.
Now I have reconnected the winkers, neither of them work. The rear units and the side repeaters are fine. The fuses are fine and the bulbs in the front wimkers are fine - all tested independently.
I am baffled - anyone know the solution by any chance, please ?????
Thanks - in hope !!

| Fuel Tank Breather - Air Suck in! Murray 18:53:17 |
| | I have a 1980 911 SC Targa and I am finding that when I take the fuel cap off to refuel, there is a large amount of air being sucked into the fuel tank. I assume there is some sort of breather valve somewhere which would normally allow air in and no fuel vapour out? Where exactly is this? Is it part of the fuelling pipework between the tank and the filler cap? I assume that something is just clogged, where exactly should I be looking? Cheers Murray

| Re: 944 FLEXABLE BRAKE PIPES Pete 13:13:08 |
| | Just to let you know I have finally recived my Brakeline kit from a well know "good" supplier, and the ends have now been changed? to convex. No explaination nothing so I am still none the wiser as to what "Good" have been sending out to other people.

| alternator hardware question Nate Nagel 01:37:46 |
| | Hi,
I may have asked this before but I don't recall anyone posting a response. If anyone has a copy of PET and can spare 10 min. to look something up for me, I need to know the specs of the studs coming out the back of the alternator that hold the air duct on. All that stuff was missing when I bought my car and I'm trying to put everything back "correctly" and I need to buy the four nuts, but I don't know what size they are. Also are there supposed to be flat washers, lock washers, whatever. Unfortunately all I have is a laptop and it doesn't have a big enough display to run PET.
It's kind of a PITA to pull the airbox in the parking lot of the hardware store to get at those studs, and the guys working there might not be totally cool with that plan.
This is an '88 944 NA by the way, if it makes any difference.
thanks,
nate

| Advice: Removal of Salt Flakes Carrera Owner 03:59:12 |
| | Well, I was a little too anxious to take the 911 out of storage because we had a couple of sunny days in Chicago. Unfortunately there is still far too much salt on the roads and of course it kicked up on the bra and especially on the rear bumper aft of the wheels.
I've washed the car today but the flakes remain. Any suggestions on a non-abrasive approach to removing those nasty flakes?
Thanks in advance.
Paco

| Re: Dashboard clock for 1987 944T Huh 01:17:02 |
| | I don't know anything about your clock, ..., but I have had a local machine shop mill several custom fixtures to accommodate a much less expensive retrofit. I realize this is heresy in this place but I like driving my 924s and it's OK if it has a Dodge wiper motor in it... I saved $250 doing it! That makes me feel good every time it rains! Maybe a $30 Grundig world clock and $20 for a custom mount might not be so bad? And lets face it, ..., only you and your machinist would know for sure. Tell the folks at the club it was custom made for the original owner, ..., then watch them drool....
