Carpet Kits Pdx944 03:00:31
Hi I want to replace my carpeting in my 1984 944. I do not want to
spend more than $300(which seems to be the normal price). Also is
their a good quality site that gives lots of information about my
specific model and not some generic site for all cars? Are molded or
cutpile kits better? Which look better? Do the kits come with the rear
hatch area carpeting? Also, I have a brown interior, and I am thinking
about buying tan carpeting. How does this turn out? I know that there
is like 10 types of tan porsche makes for the 944, so what in your
opinion is the best?

-Thanks in advance

Sorry - didn't know if you got the e-mail that I sent to the imbedded
address.

If you did, and are not interested - I understand --- was merely
trying to be helpful.

Porsche is famous for making running changes --- for instance, there
were 16 (sixteen) different transmissions in the 993 series.

I had an extra manual for my '96 --- it is dated 5/96.

It also has information on the summer '96 production that were sold
as '97 models.

It does have information on '96 models only --- for instance the C4
--- which I believe was was supplanted in '97 by the C4S.

Its imperfect, but adequate for non-concours cars.

See atch.

Heater query - can you help please?! Myles Sutherland 00:23:51
I cannot get any cool air from my late '85 oval-dash 944. It doesn't blow
really hot, just warm.

I've checked out the 'usual' things, as suggested in the very helpful Clarks
Garage pages, but to no avail. I have got the temperature control knob on
minimum and the vents set to maximum fresh air i.e. the slider on maximum
for 'up' and minimum for 'down'. What I have noticed is that the disc valve
( the one close to the heater supply hose from the block ) is in the fully
'on' position all the time, thus allowing a flow of hot water to the heater.

I would have thought that this should be closed so that no hot water finds
its way inside the cabin? I manually shut this valve and held it shut with a
cable tie, but it made no difference.

I've not had the car long - it runs and drives beautifully and everything
works except the air con. When I press the air con switch there is response,
but it just blows hotter. I assume that it needs ' regassing ' ? Is there
any connection between this and the warm 'fresh' air problem?

Sorry for all the questions. I apologise in advance if I am being thick here
but I've not had a car with air con before so know little about it. Perhaps
I should not have bought the car with this fault, but the rest of it is fine
and it was not overpriced, so took a chance. No doubt I'll pay for that now
!!!

Cheers for any help anyone can give me on this.

Myles

I need help with my sunroof Psydocs@Gmail.Com 07:11:34
I have a 1985.5 NA 944. I was told the sunroof worked in a manual
fashion - turn the wire in the trunk by hand - prior to my buying the
car. I wanted to make the car whole so I bought a sunroof motor,
switch and replacement gear. I now know that they changed the sunroof
in 1986 and that I have the old style. The motor I bought is the wrong
one, but I found update instructions, and the gear I bought is useless
to me. From what I can see, the old style is a much more resiliant
design... sort of. Turning the wire in the trunk didn't do anything
for me. Eventually it hits a stop if I turn it far enough one way or
the other, but the roof doesn't budge.

I bullied the roof out - ok, really bad idea but I did this prior to
doing any reading - and thus before I fully understood how the process
worked. Then discovered it wouldn't go back. Made for a 100% sunny
day only car. Looks good but not terribly functional.

I took apart the system and found that someone had done the same before
me based on alll the broken plastic in the central junction box. So
much for the backgound...

My question- when I turn the wire in the trunk I can see the wire turn
in the white junction box. The gear (well actually two interlocking
gears) are metal and lock nicely with no missing teeth. The two split
off wires run to the lifts, which they are connected solidly to, in the
lifting boxes. When put together, if I turn the wire I can hear the
gears turning in the box. But the lifting arms do not move. They
don't even twitch. Neither of them. Somehow, this just doesn't make
any sense to me. I am trying to find a replacement junction box in
case the one I have is damaged, but it appears fine other than the
broken mounting parts. I used some tape and larger washers to seal the
box and mount it properly... but again it doesn't work. This doesn't
make any mechanical sense to me. What am I missing?

I have read the tips on Clarks-garage and on Pelican parts. Both are
designed to address the foibles of the post 1986 version. Help?

looking for a shop... N8n 04:34:27
 Hi all,

looking for a recommendation for a shop that is willing to troubleshoot
a vibration problem I'm having with my car and '88 Porsche 944 - I've
taken it to both a Porsche specialty shop in Annapolis and a garage
with some pretty significant name recognition in Seabrook, both shops
seem to think that I'm smoking crack and that there is no problem with
my car, however when I hit about 75-80 MPH there is a serious vibration
that is enough to blur the inside rearview mirror. I've had bolts
tightened, new tires, an alignment done, and while the car drives
better than it ever has since I first got it a couple years ago the
vibration remains and *that* definitely wasn't there! The first shop
just said they didn't feel the vibration; the second actually said that
they wouldn't test drive the car above the posted speed limit so they
weren't able to reproduce the problem (although with the new tires and
good balance job, I can actually now feel it at speeds as low as 40 MPH
although it is very faint at that speed.) They actually politely
suggested that I would need to take the car elsewhere to a shop with a
dyno so that the issue could be reproduced for the mechanic, but they
were unwilling/unable to recommend a specific shop. I suspect either a
bent stub axle, bent rim, or bad rear wheel bearing but I don't have
the time or the tools to go any farther myself (of course, you need a
special tool to replace the rear wheel bearing, otherwise you have to
R&R the trailing arm and take it in to a machine shop to have it
pressed in.)

If anyone has any recommendations please post back; I haven't driven
this car in 3-4 months as someone hit it while it was parked in front
of my house and I've been shuttling it from shop to shop trying to get
this vibration issue fixed ever since getting it back from the body
shop. At this point I've sunk about $1500 of my own money into it (for
additional bodywork not related to the incident and chasing this
vibration issue) and I still don't have confidence in the car, and I'm
starting to become a little frustrated.

I live in Bowie, MD so shops close to there would be best; however if I
can get this fixed I'm willing to take it a good distance.

thanks!

nate

Porsche 993 OBD monitor readiness? Max 11:16:43
Hope someone has an answer to this.

Took my car in for a emissions inspection and was told that the OBD II
monitor was not ready to do my emissions inspection. The inspector said
I need to drive my car more before the OBD will allow the emissions to
be inspected. I had work done to my car 2 months ago and apparently the
system was reset at that time. I've already driven over 2ooo miles in
the 2-3 months since. Does anyone know or have any idea how many miles I
need to drive before the OBD monitor will be ready. The inspectors had
no idea, just that I should drive it around and then come back for the
inspection. Any help wouold be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

chip in fan blade - replace or not? Clint 09:20:02
I have a small chip on the backside of 1 of the 11 blades on my '81 911
SC. The chip is about 5/8" in length and 1/4" at it's widest part. Is
this enough to throw it out of balance and put strain on the
alternator?

thanks,

87 911 ..rear suspens lowering??? Jim Fair 07:17:20
Hoping that I can get some solid advice from the group on the best or
easiest method to lower the rear of my Porsche, all my manuals have me a tad
confused as there is apparently eary versus late model ways to do this
..torsion bar is splined and must be reset versus an eccentric bolt on the
trailing arm?? Unfortunately my manual does not state if an 87 is late or
early.
My car has 17" turbo wheels with 215 45 ZR 17 on the front and 255 40 ZR 17
on the rear , the front suspension is perfect with only about a 1/2 inch of
the top of the tire showing between the top of the tire and the fender
opening, the rear is the problem as I have about 2 inches of space. I would
like to cut this in half if possible, also of note I have turbo tie rod ends
so hopefully bump steer might not be so bad although I would be measuring
the levelness of the tie rod ends once adjustments ae completed, please
pardon my rambling on and on but I want to give as much data as
possible....thanks in advance, Jim.

1978 924 Brakes Paul 06:32:06
When I bought the car I was informed that all the brake lines and brakes
were replaced, but the master cylinder was bad. So I ordered a master
cylinder, and attempted to put it on. When I did, the rear pressure sensor
disintegrated into it's plug. the plug appears to have been shorted out
and melted, although it could be silicon from the sensor being eaten into
it by the leads rusting. I ordered and replaced those, and put the system
together, although if the rear sensor is working is anyones guess. The
brakes were still soft. Next I power bled the brakes, and they stiffened
up a bit, but when I applied power, and started the car, the brake warning
lamp came on immediately. The brakes held the car, but were still soft.
The brake lights still do not come on. I bled the back brakes again, after
a short run in it, and this stiffened them up more, but still no lights.
I guess the question I would have is whether these cars are hard to get bled
properly. Also what pressure should I use the power bleeder at? I used
about 13 psi with it. Is there a way to check the function of the pressure
switches short of the lights coming on? It really seems like a finicky
system if the rear brake lights cut out at the slightest pressure
fluctuation.

I hope I have given enough details.

Thanks,
Paul.

I have aftermarket 16" wheels on my car with Dunlop 8000's. This is my
second set and I love em. Yes, I had to have the left front fender rolled,
but the tires are great and very predictable (I've had them on the track)
and seem to wear well. Great in the wet, too. BTW, you'll get a softer
ride if you leave the 15" wheels on the car.
