| need connectors - anyone near Los Angeles have these? William B Noble 05:53:20 |
| | I am trying to install central locking into an 87 944 that didn't have it - I've got the motors, switches, central locking "brain", but I'm missing the two 12 pin rectangular connectors that connect the door harness to the central locking body harness - anyone got a couple of connectors they can offer up at a modest price?
If I am reading the PET correctly, they are part number 911 612 122 02 these connectors are used all over the place on various porsche cars to connect harnesses together - as long as it's a 12 pin connector and has at least 6 male pins installed, I can use it - I'll make my own harness (or, it would be way cool if you had the actual harness, but I have all the other connectors)
I would also like to find the microswitches that go on the door handles but that is less important . buying these things from the dealer is waaaaay to expensive. Bill

My compression is fine. The car doesn't even want to try to start. I checked my computer and everything is sound. This is all basic stuff. I've checked the speed and reference sensors, all the relays, the computer itself, the ignition circuit, the fuel system, and the battery, and the starter. Not that the starter matters, because I can't push start it. I want to know more about the factory alarm, and does the car have to have the second key hole on the quarter panel if one is installed?

| Re: 83 944 has leak.. Need help... Darthpup 01:46:31 |
| | The leak is coming from the water pump. It is located in the area you illustrate. You could remove the plastic cover easily and confirm this for yourself. The bad news is you will have to replace the pump which is a fairly major job. Go here to order a new pump and belts: www.thepartsbin.com. Or at least get an idea of parts cost. Recommend you replace the pulleys also.
Leaking water pump is common on these cars. I am on my fourth one now, in 250000 miles.

| importance of balance shaft? Vsa2@Charter.Net 22:30:50 |
| | Hi guys,
I'm new to the Porsche line and was wondering if someone could answer a question? I just acquired an 87 Porsche 944 non-turbo. I got it knowing that the alternator needed replacing, it would not charge the battery.
While pulling the alternator I noticed what looked like some type of inspection hole on the upper left (my right) of the engine front cover. When I looked into it I noticed the top balance shat did not have a belt going around it. I pulled the front cover off the engine and realized that the balance shaft belt was missing altogether. Both balance shafts spin freely but there is no belt.
My question is this... How important is the balance shaft anyway? I was able to crank the car and drive it (ran very, very well) before I got it and pulled the alternator for rebuilding. What is the purpose of the shaft and can it be driven without one for long periods.
Thanks in advance.

| Tires for 86 944 Turbo Mike 17:09:46 |
| | I could use some recommendations on a good brand of street tires for my 951. It currently has the Yokohama ES100s and they may be good track/autocross tires, but they are very squirrely on the street. Even on a dry raod in high humidity these tires slip. They have app. 85 percent tread, so thats not the problem. I'd like a good aggressive road tire for a fair price Thanks, Mike (PA)

| DME Replacement? Totalgeekdom@Gmail.Com 17:31:00 |
| | I'm having some issues finding where I can buy a replacement DME for my 87 944 non-turbo...
It's having issues with the ignition coil.
Intermittently it is not sending a spark to the distrubitor.
We have replaced, the Ignition coil and the Fuel Filter.
There is a good connection on the battery and to the ground from the battery.
I would like to run some diagnostics on the car, from the pdf manuals I found online, so how can I GET to the DME?
Thanks, Alex

| Speed transmitter Totalgeekdom@Gmail.Com 04:08:38 |
| | The pdf manuals I found online that tell me, how to diagnose DME problems, reference a 'Speed Transmitter.'
Here's some info on what I found while diagnosing it.
Resistence against term 27 and term 8 should be 0.6 kohm to 1.6kohm. Mine is intermittently (meaning when it doesn't get a spark ergo doesn't spark) 9kohm - 12kohm
The insulation resistance from term 8 and term 5 should be <1 M-ohm Mine is infinite.
At any rate, I attempted to find the speed transmitter part online, at pelicanparts and at vertexauto, and unfortunatly have had no luck.
Is there something else it will be called? Or is there somewhere I should look?
Thanks guys, -Alex

| let's talk about OBD code readers William B Noble 08:03:57 |
| | there's a plethora of these readers around from the inexpensive ones that will just read the codes to ones that plug into a laptop and do ??? to really expensive ones that dealers sell.
Who has experience with what??
to start this off, I have an INOVA unit - for the $100 I paid, it will read codes and tell me which of the polution monitors are set, but it provides no readout of real time data including O2 sensors or MAF values, etc.
I'd like to find something that provides more useful diagnostic data, hence this thread.
anyone? Bill

| no power running to Radio or Head Lamp Guest 07:16:06 |
| | After replacing the center oil gauge & changing a bulb in the back of my speedometer, my radio, electric antenna & interior head lamp stopped working I used a volt meter and determined there is no power running to the radio. I then checked all the fuse's which seem to be good & the head lamp has a brand new bulb which was working fine prior to this.
When I installed to new oil gauge I was lead to believe you needed to take the entire center console piece shifter boot and all off, which turned out not to be the case after the dirty deed was done. Could I have yanked or disconnected something linking to the radio & head lamps power supply?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
-Thanks Kalana

| Which should I buy? Scott Kelley 05:56:18 |
| | Have been looking at the Cayman - first time I've ever considered buying a new car. That started me thinking about other possibilities.
I have not kept abrest of Porsche's products for a long time now, so am looking for suggestions.
I drove a 914 for many years, and in many forms. In it's final few years it was supercharged and downright fast. I am looking for similar power and handling. I will drive it hard, in all kinds of conditions, and will most likely own it for 10 plus years. Also need reasonable cargo space, because it will be my main mode of transportation.
Considered:
Install large displacement 6 in the 914, which I still have but which hasn't run in years - very do-able - probably $15,000-20,000. Advantages - very light for excellent power/weight ratio, handles very well (for its vintage), fits me well, lots of trunk space Disadvantages - heater - hard to get power to the ground on wet roads (I live in Oregon)
Used Carerra 4 Advantages - 4 wheel drive to allow more use of the available power - ?? Disadvantages - don't know, is it reliable? - other things to consider?
I have been thinking for a long time that I would want my next car to be 4 wheel drive (AWD - whatever you want to call it) because of the issue of being able to utilize the power under less than perfect conditions. Have considered that I may modify that stand, but it remains a preference.
Any other suggestions?

| Windshield washer reservoir system Pdx944 03:13:15 |
| | Hi, when I got my 1984 944 the washer reservoir cap and tubing into the reservoir was gone. The only tubing that is there is two tubes coming from the pump and one going to the windshield jets. I went to a dealership and he gave me all the parts he said i needed. He gave me the blue cap, a hose for the reservoir and a little filter for the end of the tube. When I got it home I looked at the stuff and the cap has two holes. The hose he gave ne also doesnt fit through the cap. Can somebody either explain how everthing works or just point me to a website that explains it.
-Thanks

| Porsche Junior Tractor, Whats it worth? Greg Reed 20:08:01 |
| | Hi,
I have a Porsche Junior Diesel Tractor, Single cylinder. I live in the UK.
Starts & Runs well.
It is in use for cutting grass towing an old hayter mower.
I wondered if anyone knew what it was worth or any organisations that have knowledge of collectors tractors. I have seen reference, mainly in US that they are very desirable as restoration projects and as long in working and no major defects are worth at least $7,000 - $10,000 and restored double this.
I am a little sceptical of this as I believe there were quite a few made and not as rare as one would think but if I were offered something approaching this I would be happy to sell.
It is actually v.reliable and simple to maintain so would not wish to sell lightly but a good price & I could put to a newer compact tractor.
Any info out there?
Thanks I/A Greg Reed.

| Clutch won't disengage Guest 19:46:34 |
| | Help,
Haven't driven my 1969 912 for quite a while. When I tried, the clutch won't disengage. When I try to put into any gear, it grinds.
Replaced clutch cable and cable housing. No effect.
Tightened cable to max, and can see lever moves, but no change. Troubleshoot guide mentioned perhaps no oil in trans, but I'm full.
Any thoughts before I drop engine and transmission?

| 944 reliability Chowda Hed 06:57:16 |
| | I recently bought a boxster, and I love it.
Problem is, I do a lot of biking. So... I kept my old Ford Focus as my "biking car."
But, I'm now Porsche addicted... and I can't really afford a Cayenne (nor would I buy one even if I won the lottery). Therefore, I am looking at some older 944 models. With the hatchback and the cargo room, they'd make fine biking "crew vehicles" if you slap a roof rack on there.
But, the nice thing about the Focus is that I can just toss gas in it and go... I dont have any reliability issues.
What's the reliability, in general, on a decently-maintained 1985-1988 ish 944? Are they prone to problems and issues, or are they as reliable as my boxster has been? I'm looking for general observations. I know that one 944 could be a dud, and the other could run on thumb tacks and lava... so... generally, what kind of maint costs am i looking at for a late 1980s 944?
