| Circular metal shroud behind brake discs. Christopher Nichols 11:16:10 |
| | Hi, I had a nasty grinding sound from my front RHS this weekend ('86 944 2.5 Lux) and upon inspection found that a metal shroud that lies inboard of the brake disc has so corroded as to semi detach and start chafing on the inside of my teledial alloy. Upon removing the wheel I was able (with minimal effort) to remove the offending piece of aged ironmongery and proceed on my way with no further chafe. The questions I have are:
1. what do the shrouds do and should I be concerned enough to buy a new one/pair? Can I live happily and safely without them?
2. I have a chafed groove in the paint of the inside of my alloy wheel (it was only when I had the window open I heard the noise and stopped). How can I repair this (given I'd prefer to wait a while before reconditioning the entire set together)?
Many thanks in advance for your help, Chris.

| Need guidance on two problems: Alternator and power steering pump squeal Mr. Crash Davis 14:16:36 |
| | Car: 1990 cabriolet (S2)
Hey folks. Thanks for the advice on July 1st about the cooland overfill. The trip went fine with no tragic breakdowns, etc.
Anyway I've got two things that are bugging me. I'm fairly certain that they aren't big problems, but I want to nip them in the bud before they grow.
Problem 1: Alternator going out? I parked my car for about five days and didn't drive it. On day 6, I went out to start it and it was dead. Car had to be jumpstarted. After that, I have noticed that the voltages are off a little bit. 1 out of every 3 or 4 starts, the battery gauge will read about a half volt lower than it should. But if I shut off the car and restart it, it will usually show the proper readings after that.
I took a voltmeter and checked the battery at rest: it was around 12.5 volts. Running, the reading at the battery was 13.7.
So I'm thinking the inconsistencies are due to a pending alternator failure. Am I off base here?
Problem 2: Power steering squeal. The power steering rack and pump are new (about four months old). The deal is that when I start the car, I will hear a high pitched squeal. If I hit the gas, the squeal gets louder and faster. It then subsides if I let off. This squeal will last for anywhere from 10 - 20 seconds, and then it goes away. On a few occations, it didn't squeal at all. Steering feel normal, and I'm not leaking any power steering fluid. The power steering resoviour is full.
I'm thinking that the power steering belt may need to be adjusted? If so, is squealing a sign that the belt is too tight or too loose, etc? Any other places this could be coming from? Other causes?
Thanks. Scott.

| seeking a pair of central locking microswitches - anyone have some? William B Noble 15:31:39 |
| | just finished installing central locking on a car that didn't have it - all went well, found used lock motors, used central locing box, used console switch, made wiring harness, bought 12 pin connectors new from porsche, now all I need are the microswitches that go on the door locks - anyone have some lying around at a reasonable price?
if yes, please drop me a note - or if you know another (non-porsche) car that uses the same switch, let me know - I can of course make something from scratch, but I'd much rather have the right unit to start out with - it will save a lot of time and hassle. Bill

Can anyone explain how the Boxster wind feflector fits on to the car. I only have the central screen with brackets but don't seem to see how it fits between the seats. Does it require the two deflectors behind the seats?
Thanks Daniel

| | Don't sell that car. Have you taken a step back and looked at that car. It's awesome. Cant even compare it to sports cars nowadays. If one car ever caught my eye the most it was the 944. (911 and 928 in second place.)

On a 1990 944 Turbo do you know what colour sunroof bag came with the car? I have seen both brown and black bags of an identical design. The car that I would like to buy a bag for has a white interior with external red paintwork.
Thanks
Andy.

So here are some oft asked for files. I will keep them hosted indefinately, and I'm working on some more permanate bit torrent seeds.
Enjoy.

| '88 era CD player? Steve G 10:39:16 |
| | Hi, I recently joined the ranks of happy 944 owners but one of the upgrades I need to do to my baby is replace the radio/cassette with a radio/cd - I'd like to keep her 'period' if possible, but if it becomes too much hassle I'll just pick up something cheap at Wal-Mart.
Anyone out there have any idea what CD players were installed back then? Some web searching suggests a Panasonic CD player was an approved option in the UK at least.

| My 944 Air Con is working....I nearly dropped dead with shock! Howie 02:24:52 |
| | Hello everyone, Excuse me for bragging, but I can't contain myself any longer. Ive had my car for nearly 10 years and lived with the fact the air con doesnt work ( like every other Porsche 944 owner). Well guess what, I decide to fix the air con on my other car, and when I took the car to the garage, the owner moved his car to make way for mine, and his was a 944 turbo. So as you can imagine, the first thing I asked him about was the air con. "Of course mine works" he said, so I quickly told him he had another job on his hands. Anyway to cut a long story short, he vacuumed out the R12 gas, pressurised the system to check for leaks. There weren't any. So he changed the service nozzles over to the new retrofit R134a nozzles and gassed it up to see if the compressor was seized. Mixed in with the gas was a mixture of dye and esther lubricant which is compatable and will mix with the original PAG lubricant in the compressor. Bingo, everything sprung into action and worked like a dream. I could have had this working 10 years ago if I hadn't listened to all the so-called experts who told me i was wasting my time and my money. As it turns out the whole thing cost me less than Ј100. So go on, give it a go.....it might just work, it did for me.
Regards Howie
