944 for sale 160k miles

Mike999 23 April 2005 01:29:19
 Hello,
Their is a 1987 944 for sale near me. Its $4600 and is in good shape
but it has 160k miles on it and I’m worried about how reliable it will
be. I dont know very much about the 944’s or how long they will last.
Also, the blue book value is $3115 so Im not sure if its worth it. I
would be greatful for any advice.

Thanks,

Mike

1st, the price seems high unless it's "showroom" condition. Does the owner
have maintenance records? How much DOCUMENTED maintenance history does the
owner have? What does tie interior and exterior look like? Are there any
leaks? What about needed repairs?

2nd, have a reputible Porsche service shop perform a buyers inspection. They
will be able to determine what the condition of the car is.

I've owned a 924S and now own a 968. If they've been maintained they are a
pleasure to drive and own.

if the sellar has maint records and the car has been well kept, then it
is just reaching middle age... the 944 engine is good for more the 250k
if the oil changes and such are on schedule.

I was nearing 200K on mine before a Mercedes decided to take off the
front bumper...

944 typically will go to 300 to 400 thousand miles before needing
engine overhaul.
Offer the owner 3400.00 dollars.

Not true - I admire the engineering that Porsche puts into the cars, but
300,000 miles is pushing it before some sort of overhaul is needed (eg:
Head skimming, valve seals, piston rings etc....). Having said that, it's
a much better investment than many cars out there, and a very serious
contender in it's price range.
