ATF Fluid low?

Sm704 9 April 2005 15:50:35
I was checking the Automatic Transmission Fluid level on my '85 944,
and I noticed something that may be of concern. With the car off, the
fluid level is right about at the "max" mark of the container. However,
when the car is running, and in neutral with the parking brake set, the
fluid level looks like it's just below the "min" mark.

Does this indicate I am low on ATF fluid or is this normal? If I am low
on ATF fluid, then why doesn't the level appear below the "min" mark
when the car is off, but only when it's on?

Thanks.

The procedure for checking the automatic tranny fluid on every car
I've owned called for the car to be running while checking it. I can't
imagine that the 944 automatic trans would be any different. I'd say
that you're low on fluid.
BTW...My 944 is a 5-spd so you should really check your owner's manual
or do a search at Pelican or Rennlist to be sure, but I'd bet it's the
same as any other car with an automatic transmission.

When in operation the ATF is in circulation and therefore reduces the
amount shown on the dip stick in the reservoir. This is true for most
any hydraulic transmission.

read your manual. if you don't have the manual, call a porshce dealer or
write porsche and ask - for most cars you check ATF level with the car
running, in neutral, with the trans fluid warmed up. Please follow factory
instructions
